Re: Class half empty

I might have joined you in STF, if the Protege wagon was classed there instead of STC. CST is no place for an STF car. Based on earlier years, I tried CST in the Protege thinking it would be mostly newbies in an odd assortment of incompletely-developed cars. This year it was more like the STC/STR ov...

You can get a registrar's signature instead of paying a notary, true. But the card itself is not free unless you're an SCCA corner worker.

Re: Volvo V70 or Subaru outback?

My parents have a pair of the previous generation Legacy Outback. Handling, well, they're huge cars and they behave like it. They seem to have what feels like rear bump steer -- at least when they hit a sharp bump, the rear end twitches to the side. The only serious problem has been the need to repl...

Re: End Link Question ...

Yeah, th RB links might be an improvement over the stock NA rubber links, but they are a downgrade from stock NB. Too long, and the joints are so stiff it's like they aren't really jointed.

Re: End Link Question ...

Marshall is right in the case of an asymmetric arm length or motion ratio between the two sides. For an asymmetric endlink mounting angle but using symmetric holes, I'd say that you will end up with the same motion ratio on both sides if the bar end and mounting hole on the arm don't move relative t...

Re: When do the PAX Index's come out for the RT Classes ?

Bobby, when you say 0.975 was used "at Nationals", what do you mean by that? PAX isn't a part of Nationals competition. There is an exception this year for the RT classes, and that exception is within those classes, the Stock indexes are used. I'm guessing you saw someone's list of indexed...

Re: Sunday 9/23/2012 Videos

What I think you're seeing as a chalk outline doesn't really show up in the original video. I can't say which configuration was correct based on the video, but it sure was different when I came around on the 3rd run! The cone moved between run 2 and run 3 for our 2-driver car, and remained in the ne...

That's weird -- it seems to have happened when I uploaded it to Vimeo. The sound is actually ahead of the video. That explains why it cuts off before the end of the video.

Re: passenger question

The rule provides an explicit penalty, and that penalty makes it clear that it is not a safety-related rule. Your runs are not scored for competition, but you're not booted from the event.

That said, I'd be in favor of eliminating that rule entirely. I just don't see much competitive benefit.

Re: Has the Abarth been Classed ?

Most models have had the SSF published by NHTSA's safercar.gov web site. Now they offer it as "rollover probability", but Marshall dug up the formula they use to calculate that from the SSF, and it's possible to back-solve. As it turns out, the 1.3 SSF limit is equivalent to a 14% rollover...

Re: Has the Abarth been Classed ?

Bill, the NHTSA does do a dynamic rollover test as part of its rollover ratings. Not flipping in such a test doesn't mean the vehicle is safe, which is why the NHTSA also uses the static stability factor (height of the center of mass, divided by the track width) as the main factor in their published...

Nothing personal John Steve, what you've got to realize is that the people on the SEB and the SAC are regular people who participate in autocross and these forums. When you make a comment like that, it is absolutely personal. I won't name names here, but there is plenty of evidence here to support ...

I personally think that they're underestimating the E46 M3, but it sounds like people have been impressed with the performance of the newest Mustang and don't think any of the cars being moved will dominate. I think the E90 is probably not as quick as the E46 due to the added weight & size. I ha...

Yep, the rears are more closely matched than the fronts, even though it was a rear shock I was worried about. Advice for the wise: don't try to match your rebound settings based on how fast the shock self-extends!
