long story short, the rules dictate that they run at high angles because they're lot allowed to hang off over the back of the car.

HELL NO! general rule of thumb. thread engagement equal to bolt diameter. in this case: 4.3x1.5=6.45mm of engagement....bolt size=14mm. btw, there is still a gouge in the pavement at spring mountain where i ripped all the lug bolts out on my gti and the brake rotor dug in after the wheel fell off. t...

apparently the reasoning is that the teams have data saying that most engine failures occur after the 1000' mark. They're taking the engine failure as the somewhat obvious root cause of the crash.
