Which are illegal Pirelli's?

Post by David Crandon »

OK, so I'm a newbie, running an 03 S2000. I'm running uncompetitively in the STR class because of mods I did just for the street, and don't have to bucks to convert yet to a competitive class. So, I'm just having fun right now!

I was offered some street tires for a good price...some Pirelli P-Zero's. But somebody mentioned that there is a particular Pirelli street tire that is excluded by the rules.

These are the newer P Zero's (treadwear 220), (not the older P Zero System, treadwear 140, also called P Zero Direzionale and Asimmetrico), and not the R compound Corsa. I've been told that the newer PZero is a higher performance track tire than the older type PZero System, even though it's got a much higher treadwear rating.

Anybody know anything about these tires in general, and which are excluded?

Thanks from a newbie.

From the ST section of the 20210 rules:
"14.3 C. Tire models must not appear on the following list, which may be altered at any time by the SEB upon notification of the membership.

Pirelli P Zero Corsa"

Hope you're having fun with your new obsession!

Edit: Damn...Eric took the short-winded route and beat me.

When in doubt take the short route!

I'm the OP for this question last year...

Just wondering if anyone knows why the rulebook specifically excluded the P-Zero Corsa. It has a treadwear rating of 60, so it's automatically excluded from STR class anyway (like all R-Compound tires), so why does the rulebook specifically mention this tire?

Pirelli made one size of the Corsa with a higher treadwear rating (over 140).

And to expand on that answer, the rules require a minimum number of sizes, five I think, to make a tire legal for competition, whether it's an R-comp or a street tire. Don't know about full-on slicks.

I don't think they needed to consider whether it met the availability requirements. The size with the high treadwear rating is probably the same basic tire as the other sizes, which are DOT-Rs, so it was excluded from Street Touring.

GRM has another ST tire test, using their STR MX5
