In '05 we left at 9am and got there at 7pm. Forgot about the time change in the middle of Wendover, and we took a wrong turn in Ely that cost us 40 minutes. So it should have taken us roughly 8.5 hrs to get there.
It's roughly 360 miles from Las Vegas, so 5-6 hours from Vegas, depending on how fast you drive (OK, 3.5hrs if your name is Randy ) and how many stops you make.

yeah, what David said, we typically leave thursday afternoon and sleep in Vegas, then finish the drive to Wendover on Friday with time to casually do practice starts.

Don't forget that the city of Wendover, in Utah and Nevada, operates on moutain time.

When towing, should I take I-15 to I-80? Or I-15 to Highway 93?

We go: I-15 to 93 to 318 to 6 to 93 (towards West wendover, not Wells)

Get gas in North Las Vegas, I think we tend to stop at the Cheyanne Exit. Top off in Alamo (93 mi). Then drive to Ely (~150 mi). Ely to West Wendover (118 mi)

and on the 318 they are serious about the no gas stations thing, about 100 miles of no gas service.

These higways are much faster than they sound. Just remember to slow down for the cities. Its kind of a neat drive, who knew central nevada had so much green and cattle.

I agree with Jayson, these highways are much more interesting than they sound. Not all the desert of southern Nevada. And definatly follow all speedlimits in the towns (most painful part of the trip).

I loved Wendover in May. There was still snow on the mountains. Part of that drive is on the route of the famous Silver State Classic open road speed trials.

Since you can never be sure if it will be on the calendar next year, I want to do Wendover this year, just to experience the venue.

I think Packwood is more likely to be on the calendar next year, so I'll put it off until then.

My summer classes got canceled yesterday, so I might just make the trip up to WindyOven. My "schedule" just went from "Kept Man" to "Slacker Dude". No classes til first of November. I'd already arranged to be off for the September/October quarter. Oops....

In that case, just drive from Wendover to Packwood (or Portland), and then fly back for a while. Or, do what Julie and I did (along with the Berry family) a few years ago, and plan a trip through Yellowstone on the way to Packwood (we actually went to Bremerton). Of course, we didn't have 2-3 weeks to kill between events, and we were driving the Protege, not 21,000 lbs and 55 feet of rig. :D

Hmmmm....

Looking at the maps... Wendover to Packwood to Pasadena is an interesting loop.

Annie, you know anything at storage options at Packwood? Or who to talk to?

LA to Wendover to LA is about 1250mi
LA to Packwood to LA is about 2220mi
for a total of 3470mi

LA to Wendover to Packwood to LA is 2466mi

So you save over a 1000mi by combining the trip. You add a flight, 280 miles in travel to the airport, and airport long term parking, and a rental car at home....
So, call it a 700 miles savings balanced against the extra flight, the rental car and parking.

I've asked the question of a few people who have contacts with the Packwood site owner, I'll let you know what I find out!

Storage on site at Packwood should not be a problem. We will be out there this weekend, and talk with Angus, the site manager.

Once we get an offical approval, i will post it up.

Thanks Keith!

My mapping program shows that Packwood and SeaTac are only 90 miles from each other using what it considers to be the "quickest" route. That route looks like skinny curvy roads. Fun.

Which airport do people use? SeaTac or Portland???

Steve, you can't get from Packwood to SeaTac, it would be quicker to go to... like Butte, Montana.... :D I went from Packwood to Seattle and my Nephew came down from Bellevue and I think it took like a day and a half...each. You forgot "skinny curvy BUMPER TO BUMPER roads"..... But sometimes there is only one other vechicle on the road--the farmer on his John Deere going 5 mph for 10 miles...right in front of you...

Not sure where you got that number, You can't do the drive in 90 minutes... too much traffic. budget 2-2.5 hours (doh, reading comprehension sucks)

The drive is very fun, especially the hwy 123/hwy 410 route. A little bumpy, not SP car friendly.

Both airports are about the same distance from the site, so pick the one that has better flights. (probably SeaTac, plus the road north is more scenic/fun)
