We need new Safety Stewards!

Post by Mike Simanyi »

Ladies and Gents,

Our supply of Safety Stewards is rapidly shrinking. If you've ever been interested in getting more involved with the region and thought "I like the guaranteed practice entry," you might have what it takes to be a Safety Steward.

Seriously, the position is extremely important, both in regard to our *ability* to host events as well as for the immediate safety of everyone involved. The SCCA will provide training for you and you'll have a couple on-the-job training sessions to learn the craft.

If you're interested, the only requirements are a full SCCA membership and your willingness to join the party.

Please post here if you're interested.

I'm not sure about the Where and When yet. I'm trying to find out the level of interest so I can coordinate a room for this. The La Quinta Inn near the Ontario airport has a good room for a group up to about 20 people, and the training session will coincide with a required re-training session for our existing SSS volunteers.

I'm leaning toward early November, perhaps Saturday the 7th, if that works out for Brian Robertson. More later...

I'm interested too, but 7th is not going to work for me. That's when I take my Chemistry GRE

Would another date be available? How about somewhere more central to OC/Southbay areas than Ontario?

Can we fly to other regions for this refresh? Or do I need to turn in my license?

Given our own schedule after the 7th, I'd say that pushes us back to December 5th at the earliest then.

Anyone moving, fumigating or organizing their sock drawers then?

I thought the retraining was only if you wanted a 3 year license. Can you not renew with two events worked anymore?

No. The SSC has determined that all SSS need a fresher course. All SSS with expired license can take the fresher class.

The more prior notice the better. Our family calendar runs about 1-1.5 mos in advance, particularly on weekends during the holidays. 12/5 works for me.

I'm licensed til end of Feb like Ken. Same with Stacey.

So, if we don't take the fresher? We can't do it at the same time. I'm not inclined to do our fresher course. Stacey probably will.

Hmm...If all current SSS need to have a refresher course, I think they should first update the renewal form.
http://www.scca.com/documents/SSS%20Appl%20.pdf

That looks like the same form I've completed in the past when renewing, and the same form I plan to send in THIS NOVEMBER (as in next month)! If I need to do a refresher course, It's definitely not obvious on the form.
I don't want to be shut out for a year, so I guess I really need to get an instructor to give me a refresher course ASAP.

Topeka's view on what is required may differ from Monrovia's take.

You will recieve a notice that you will need a fresher. Maybe this year or next year. Sooner or later all SSS will need a fresher class.

From the Safety Belt 2008 Q4: More About Continuing Education
By Kathy Barnes, SSC Chairman mailto:kjbarnes22@snet.net
At its meeting in September, the Board of Directors approved the proposal for renewing SSS licenses for a 3 year period, with the requirement that each of us work 5 events during that time and participate in a Solo Safety Seminar. This will give each SSS the opportunity to share our experience with trainees or with other licensed Safety Stewards. As soon as the proposal was made, some Divisions were going ahead and creating training materials. As the season progressed, the SSC was asked to develop a curriculum for the program. There are some training materials on the SCCA website -- however, we are working on developing more. If you have some materials that you would like to share with other Regions, please pass them along to the SSC.

And SB 2009 Q2: License Renewal
By Kathy Barnes, SSC Chairman
kjbarnes22@snet.net

The first group of 3-year Solo Safety Steward licenses has been processed. Congratulations to everyone who worked at least 5 events and took the opportunity to attend a continuing education seminar to receive the 3-year license. Working with the Membership & Licensing folks at the National Office, we have developed a timeline which should enable all long-term (3 or more years) SSSs to receive their 3-year licenses by 2011 by working a minimum of 5 events in 3 years and attending a continuing education class. What’s a continuing education class? It’s just a SSS class taught by a licensed SSSI. You need to attend at least one during that 3-year window to get your license renewed. In simple terms, it’s just a refresher course. Things change over time and we want to make sure that all of our SSSs are up-to-date on the latest issues and requirements. License holders with over 1 year of service, who have worked as a SSS at 5 events and completed a continuing education seminar, will also be eligible for a 3-year license.

Solo rule book: E Effective 1/1/09, following an initial one-year licensing as a SSS,
the SCCA Licensing Department shall issue a renewal application
every three (3) years, pending completion of the appropriate
number of events and continuing education as a Solo Safety
Steward. All requests for such renewals shall be made by submitting
a renewal application with the appropriate number of
events and the continuing education class date recorded in the
application. During each three-year licensing period, the SSS
must participate in one (1) continuing education seminar and
serve as a SSS at five (5) events. The DSS shall be responsible
for confirmation of participation in the continuing education
process. The renewal date is the same as membership renewal.
