Turbo---Yaris or another 1.3 or 1.4 engine?
There is an ongoing discussion on the DM/EM Yahoo group about the potential of a Turbo-ed 1.4 engine for DM.
There has been a group of Yaris' at a couple of events and one or more were turbo-charged----what's up? How much grunt and go?? Is RWD or AWD possible--within reason?

I've been thinking about building a mid-engine 1.4FI for DM. The 1.4 GM ecotec in the new Cruze looks interesting and so does the Euro VW Polo engine.

Also the Mazda Demio, not here, but available on ebay, is 1.3....
Aaron, I don't think that one of my Spridget tubs with a turbo 1.3 or 1.4 would really fit in FP.
Toby, There's a Yaris on ebay for 549 a Mazda for 699---cruze turbo not affordable yet....I don't think...

Hi guys, I have the turbo Yaris. Runs great up to 24 psi on pump gas, thanks to water/meth injection. A lot of work, and a lot of fun. mine weighs about 2160 right now, but I do use it as a street car. Could get down to the 1900 mark fairly easily.
If I were going to truly prep the car for autocross, I would go back down to a GT25 turbo (currently a GT 28) for earliest possible spooling and do some cam work etc. to pump up the mid-range torque as much as possible.
Once the car hits its powerband, it's thrilling and with the right suspension mods, I think it's competitive. (I'm not, but it is, ha)
Will be at the Oct event, and happy to field any questions. I'm in Canoga Park, for anyone that happens to want to visit my shop.

So Don, assuming a spridget is a spridget given how much you can modify them, could you build yours into a functional clone of Jeff's and run a street-port 13B rotary in DMod?

But, I was more interested in the possibility of going the 1.4 engine with a turbo route! One of the existing powers of DM (Peter Raymond), has stated that the combination will put an end to the class as HE knows it-----F20, Duratec, or K20..... He thinks that turbos should be banned, have a larger multiplier, change the existing NA engines up to 2.5 l, or all of the above!! }:)
I have this '65 Spridget on a rotisserie in the backyard and a 10 pak of new Sawzall blades----

Plus, meeting sound in SD with a ported rotary might be a bit of a nightmare...

If he's wrong then you don't want one 'cause he's wrong.
Keep in mind DMod has been won more than once with box stock 1.8 to 2-liter swaps. The 13B is 2.6 liter.
13B legal sound is doable. You're only allowed street porting, so huge bore mufflers won't be required for breathing. A stock RX8 muffler will probably make the meter. Some sort of racy bullet muffler won't. Racing Beat should know about aftermarket mufflers v. sound. Just be sure to build in a muffler bay while you're slicing & dicing the car. At worst, two ultraflo's in series like Waynes S7 should get the job done. His car went from violator to can't be heard on course.

Bill, do you still have the black Lotus? I would think that would make a great starting point for a DM or XP car with a 1.4FI.

I'm in the middle of a project of ruining the car. Choosing to retain the original engine, the car is now assigned to DP at a massive weight increase. The chassis won't take that kinda weight, so I'm doing a body-off rebuild of the chassis to integrate it with a bumper to bumper cage. Which means I'll have to cut up the body to install it clam-shell style. When done, I run heads up with miatas and MR2's with same cc/lb.Toby Larsson wrote:Bill, do you still have the black Lotus? I got turned off DM when they built a carbon fiber replica body and wrapped it around a sportsracer monocoque chassis and a high dollar BDX or whatever. That just moved the stakes too high IMO.
Not big on XP because they're based on a formula discouraging light cars. AP was seen as a failure because very light cars dominated, and they didn't want to repeat that mistake. So the XP weight-to-engine formula is non-linear favoring heavier cars, as opposed to the other production classes where the ratio is linear. (Mathwise, I suppose they're both linear, but if you read the rules you'll see what I mean.)

Oh I'd bet it's still competitive. You just have to fit it with an alien driver to win the class. Driving is still the most important factor.
There are only a few significant differences between a BMod sportsracer and a BMod/europa hybrid in DMod. Aero DF is probably the biggest.
