Converting lug bolts to lug nuts

Post by Kurt Rahn »

Putting my new tires on my car this weekend reminded me of how ridiculous BMW/Mini's use of lug bolts is, and I'm planning to convert them to lug nuts by installing new studs. Before I do that though, I want to make sure that's legal in stock classes. I couldn't find a specific mention of it in the rulebook. Did I just miss it, or does that fall under "if a modification is not specifically authorized in this or previous sections of these rules, it is not allowed?"

I think you just missed it. Search the pdf on 'lug' or the like. I'm pretty sure it's allowed across the board.

13.4 paragraph 2...

"Wheel spacers are permitted, provided the resultant combination com- plies with the offset requirements of this section. Wheel studs, lug nuts, and/or bolt length may be changed."

Kurt, what year is your MINI? the the 06.5 and newer cars have 14x1.25 bolts... making replacement studs hard to find.

It's a 2010 (R56). You're right about being harder to find. I just contacted Vorschlag, and they have M12 but not M14. He said they had plans for offering M14, but not yet.

the only source I found was Texas Speedwerks, now part of Way Motor Works. I have had them on my 07 for 35k with no problems (m14x1.25 to 1.5)

I wish wheel bolt pattern can fall under this rule... say from 5x110 to 5x114.
No performance added.. just more convenient to find a wheel that fits.

I'm pretty sure there's a way around this. Assuming you're talking about Stock classes, get those spacers that converts from 5x110 to 5x114.3. Most likely these spacers will be thicker, then compensate by changing the offset of the wheels.

BTW, I found another place that has the conversion kit: Revolution Motor Works (http://www.revolutionmotorworks.com/?pa ... uct_id=16)
