Andy Porterfield, RIP

Post by Bob Beamesderfer »

Former member of the BoD and area director, club racer, steward of the sport and all-around good guy. He was 82. He came to the aid of the our Solo program when a certain faction (mostly one person) in Papa Cal Club was trying to take over the program. :(

RIP Andy. Only spoke to Andy a couple times, but from those impressions, he seem like a very gracious, likable man.

Sad news. His shop is several blocks from our office, and he's helped me in person when I've gone in there to buy brake pads or the odd race widget.
I saw him drive the wheels off a GT1 Camaro at Willow about 15 years ago.

Back in the day, at Riverside when I was trying to get thru a Cal Club driver school in my GT350, Andy was an instructor. Then when I was running Formula Ford, he was running a Corvette as I recall. I think he was even in the Pro ranks. This guy was a total racer, walking motorsport encyclopedia and well thought of good guy. He'll be missed. Not many motorheads in Southern California and I'm sure beyond who does not know the name Andy Porterfield.
