Hey gang! We've got a special treat for you! We've managed to score a weekend at a new venue. We will be running the weekend of Aug. 3-4, 2019 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, CA.

Register here: https://www.motorsportreg.com/events/au ... cca-890174

This is a new venue for the club and we'll be strictly enforcing a 93db noise limit (bring your San Diego setups!). Registration is open now.

Being a new venue, we're still working on some of the details for the event, so please stay tuned to this thread. If you have any questions, please share here and we'll get you an answer ASAP. We're planning on a Saturday morning setup and we'll be running karts if they sign up, so the Saturday schedule will be TBD until we have registration closed.

If you're interested in helping out, we have some staff positions open so just let me know what you're interested in and we'll find something for you. We also need some extra help moving the RV, and setting up/stocking the new hospitality tent compound we've been trying to provide for our club. If you would be willing to help us with some of those tasks, we'll staff those jobs and count them as work assignments for you. Again, new venue and some new jobs, we'd love to have some extra help!

Stay tuned.....more details to come! :)

What is the testing method for the 93 db limit? Distance of testing device, angle, engine rpm, etc?

The measurement will be taken at a point where the vehicle can reasonably be expected to be under load at full throttle. The measuring point will be 50 feet from the edge of the course using an ANSI Type 2 sound meter set to “A” weighting, “Slow” response. The microphone will be 3 to 4 feet above ground level, positioned perpendicular to vehicle direction of travel. The microphone will be away from structures (e.g., buildings) as is practical.

Looks like a good location and close to me! I won't have trouble making sound; but keeping the car from going into limp mode with the summer heat will be a challenge...

In addition to Anthony's comments, we generally want to capture sound at the "loud" point on course so to the extent possible, we'll measure it where drivers are generally full throttle and in the upper rev ranges. Full throttle at 1200 rpm doesn't usually reveal much about how loud a car is for the course workers and our neighbors.

And here I just finished cutting my muffler off because I'm not loud enough for CAM class...

only joking, for now.

But, whats the situation with trailers? Will we be able to leave one overnight? Is it wise to even think about doing that?

You can, but you should keep in mind that there isn't any security on-site for us. Anyone walking down the street can step right onto the property, and anyone driving down the street can drive on. My suggestion is to use the buddy system and some carefully selected locks. Lock as many trailers together as possible and make sure the ball locks are also in place.

I also would like to find someone - preferably a light sleeper - who's willing to sleep in their RV or trailer overnight, parked where they have a view of our timing trailer.

Keep in mind most trailer couple locks are terrible. Something like this works better. https://www.provenlocks.com/collections ... pler-locks

But not with the lock that comes with it becuase it can be subject to drilling attacks. There are better steel bodied locks without the issue.

Otherwise everything else is just leaving your car parked in a parking lot overnight, I would just keep things in the trunk and out of sight.

Well, I really like the location, it will cut my driving time down a lot.

Is this going to be the permanent location or will we still be going to Fontana at the end of the month.

How big is the lot?? Will we still be able to have same basic course setups and run times??

A lot is still up in the air. We've got the chance to do another event this year if we don't blow it with the neighbors. End of August event will be at Fontana. This Santa Anita lot is not as big as Fontana's lot, and we have some safety issues we'll be addressing, but we do anticipate a fun course for sure. It's new to the whole club, so we'll be learning as well.

Thanks Randy

Not sure if I can come on this short notice. I just got a newbie to sign up for the 8/24 event with me.

Do you or does anyone know if a stock C6Z06 will pass the sound test ?????????????

Most if not all stock cars pass fine. Except for gt350R mustangs.

Thank you, that is very informative. In your experience, how crazy does an exhaust system have to be to break the dB limit? Would a an aftermarket cat-back with chambered muffler exceed 93 dB? Or is a straight pipe required to get that loud?

there are some phone apps if you wanted to do some informal testing. pitch plays a role as well. Steve O's rx-8 which sounds "loud" typically doesn't create high db ratings.

Aaron, 93 dB at 50' is moderately, but not crazily, quiet. If you have a large V8 and put on an exhaust that allows you to enjoy the sound more, you may be on the edge. If you do the same on a turbocharged car, it's rarely a problem.

For example I was co-driving a friend's FRS last year and I think it measured around 80 db at the Crow's Landing Pro Solo and Tour last year. At those same events, we had a Mustang GT-R and an Audi R8 that blew well over 100 db. A straight pipe on the Mustang would likely exceed 115 db. (We've had a reading like that from a straight piped Mustang.)

Where are you located? If you're anywhere near Tustin I may be able to help you in person.

Aftermarket short ram and CAI intakes can blow sound too as we found on the little STS Civic.
Technically no factory car (assuming no exhaust cutout used) should blow sound ever as delivered from the factory.

The intake noise on 4-cylinders can boost the sound quite a lot. S2000's have the same problem ... but it sounds glorious!

I'm coming and bringing a first timer with a Corvette.

I will be there early to lend a hand in setting up.

I'm sure many of us have had experience with the sound control program at San Diego. Of concern is the odd ball event where a dozen cars break over the limit which had never been even on the edge. It happened to me. 88-89dB event after event and then sent home one day for being over 95. Along with several others. No doubt there was a reason, but they couldn't isolate it. And they tried -- even relocated the meter to another part of the course. My point is don't expect this to be cut and dried settled science.

Even if problematic, I know you have no choice. You gotta do what you gotta do. We put people with sound meters and cell phones on the mesas around the site to get the neighbor's experience. As I recall tire noise seemed to be the most obvious and objectionable. Something we didn't even notice at the site.

What will happen if you register a high db? Will it be instant disqualification and go home. Or will you be given opportunity to modify driving at meter (reduce throttle)

At solo2.com under membership and supplemental requirements it says

4.11 SOUND CONTROL Purpose: Our primary purpose is to preserve the healthy competitive environment, which we all enjoy by maintaining a harmonious relationship with the community. It is our intent to provide sound control definitions and standards toward this end. Our organization, in making efforts to limit offensive noise emissions, wishes to demonstrate a desire for harmony with nearby residents, which in turn will reduce the likelihood of complaints and general intolerance of our sport. Cal Club Autocross will follow the National Standards for Sound Control.

So nationally

If a driver in a vehicle exceeds 93 dBA, the driver will be allowed to attempt a viable remedy to functionally alter the exhaust system to reduce the sound level of the vehicle before his/her next run that day. (A “mechanical delay” per Solo® Rules Section 6.8.D may be used.) If the excessive reading occurs on the driver’s last run of the day, the Chief Steward, Sound Control Steward, or designated representative is authorized to impose a DNF penalty on that run. The use of an adjustable directional exhaust exit to laterally aim the exhaust output away from the sound meter position does not constitute a viable remedy. Adjustable directional exhaust exits may only be aimed straight up, straight down, or straight back. If a viable remedy has been attempted in the judgment of the Chief Steward, Sound Control Steward, or representative, the driver will be allowed to take his/her next run. If the driver declines any viable remedy or if the change is deemed inadequate by the Chief Steward, Sound Control Steward, or representative, the driver will forfeit all subsequent runs in the vehicle (unless an approved viable remedy is completed before the next run). If the driver in the vehicle exceeds 93 dBA again on any subsequent run, that run will be scored a DNF and all additional runs the for that driver will be forfeited. If a sound violation which would incur a DNF occurs on a run for which a rerun would otherwise be granted (per Section 7.4), the sound-based DNF will stand and there will be no rerun. For the purposes of sound measurement and enforcement, a “run” is def ined as any attempt at driving through the course, whether or not it is scored or a rerun is allowed. Any functional remedies implemented to reduce the sound level of a vehicle may not be removed (including the next day of the event) and may be subject to re-inspection by the Chief Steward, Sound Control Steward,

Note that in addition to what Anthony posted, there is a provision for giving you a warning if you are close to the limit, so you can act accordingly.

Howard....your Z06 won't be a problem. If your buddy's car is a problem, we'll do what we can to resolve the issue (but I can't imagine any Corvette being all that loud unless highly modified). The rules outlined here are inline with National level events, and they aren't typically kicking cars out left and right. This is a new venue for our club, and we just want to ensure we leave a good first impression. We'll be enforcing the rules for sure, but we won't form an angry mob and chase you out of the lot!

We do have a few Mustang folks in our family that may have some issues to deal with though!
