Long Beach site picture

Post by Jeff Shyu »

I brought my camera to work today because i didn't want to leave it in the car while it's getting washed.

thought i'd take a picture from my office, of the vacant "lot" that we discussed in the other thread.

Image

i tried looking at the map on how to get there, but it seems like the civil engineer designed the access to be easy to get out, but coming in is a pain. haven't taken the time during lunch to go take a closer look yet.

edit: i suspect the surface may be concrete too, considering it was designed to take the load of containers stacked on top of each other.

edit 2: i looked a bit closer, looks like i can take Henry Ford Ave and go to New Dock rd to get there. I won't have a chance this week, but maybe next week, i'll take a lunch break out to the site.

I have no idea if it's been looked at officially. I saw it one day, took pictures and gave them to the Committee. Maybe Brian Robertson will see this and check again or even for the first time. 8-)

it just sounded like you guys were short on available places to run, when the schedule conflict in sept was identified.

this spot doesn't seem like it'd be in any danger of being booked for any other events.. :P

it's so far inland compared to the other docks, i honestly don't think it's used for anything except for maybe overflow storage, which probably doesn't happen often.

OT ... Karen and I went by that lot that Cam mentioned behind the Cosco in Glendale. It's the parking lot for a "chapel." Actually quite nice, slight elevation change, no obstacles ... bigger then the lot that we used for the Team Blew Rim of the World Auto Crosses. Not big enough for all of us ... but would make a very nice practice lot ... but probably too close to residents. There is a fence separating it from the Cosco parking lot.

If Jeff can take a look out his window & confirm there is still no activity on that site I can try making a call to someone I know at the Port. I thought they were doing something there now...

Development has been awaiting approvals for awhile (which is typical for these projects). It is asphalt... the Port doesn't typically use concrete on terminals as it is more work to change things.
No, Mako -- you do NOT need to supercharge your new Miata! ...cuz now it's my turn to take it to the track :)
hmmmm... it is no longer "new" -- is it time to get faster?

it's been a ghost town the entire day, and while i don't look out the window that much, whenever i DO, there's nothing there.

pretty sure it's been a ghost town for a while.

Why would anyone bother looking at a new site for Cal Club? The region does not even make use of a perfectly good site in OC (El Toro) just seems like a lot fuss to try to get in a new place for no reason.

When El Toro allows us to do Solo Trials we'll stop looking. :)

BMWCCA has never used El Toro (LA or SD chapters). SD has Qualcomm Stadium, LA ...well that's a whole other story but in the past it's been Irwindale Speedway (since I started with them in 2001), then Hollywood Park, then California Speedway.

As for WHY Cal Club doesn't use El Toro...that's a good question. My "guess/theory" is that AMCI is perhaps isn't as concrete as Cal Speedway in terms of dates? Meaning that when we book a date at Cal Speedway it's pretty much set in stone, and rarely do we get "bumped" by them due to some event, as usually their events are planned on the calendar well in advance. Again....just my theory. I could be wrong so if Mr. Motonishi or Thomason or Isley know better then I'd love to have more events at El Toro. Cooler, and different location and it's "Da OC"!

Yeah but if there was an event there would you start racing again in your ProSolo dominating STU E46 M3? ;)

Gio, for as many meetings that you attended you sure don't pay any attention.

Now if somebody has a better "in" at El Toro than Brian or Ken, let me know.

Maybe we should. I don't know how it was presented to them. All I know is that El Toro said no to Solo Trials.

I haven't been to a meeting in like 4 months! But that's why I said "my guess/theory" (i.e. I vaguely remember, or forgot). That's why I mentioned Ken's name Glenn.

Well barring some unforseen event (i.e. the E46 does NOT go into STU), I absolutely would. It'd be fun.

At El Toro, the buck stops with George Doganis.

Well, not exactly. Isn't Bobby in charge of booking it? There's also the fact that El Toro is more expensive than Cal Speedway.

Respect or Except? :D

Solo Trials are out there because of the allowed speed that's shown in the rule book is in DIRECT conflict with the allowed speed Irvine has dictated. What is 'actual' with solo2, porche and others is not so relevant.
