here's the linky to today's photos, broken down into 5 pages (~455 photos each. Yeah, it would have made more sense to break them down by heats, but I have no idea who's in what heat :unimpressed: )

and.. if you want some full size pics, read here }:)

here's some "optimistic cornering" pics..

haha.. so do I. unfortunately, the combination of the sun, and the 600mm lens (which I used exclusively today), it was hard to get *far* enough to frame a decent shot, without the porta potty.

it was either the porta potty in the back ground, or a corner worker in the foreground.. :mrt:

i couldn't exactly yell at the corner worker to get out of the way, tempted as I was..

I should have mine up tonight. I was only able to shot some of the first and the third run groups.

Ok so like your picking on me right? I make a big deal out of catching the wheels in motion, so you do a great job on everyone elses car except mine which looks like it's parked. :o

Good shots.

Given the number of DNFs and dirty runs this weekend I thought it was just journalistic commentary. That is a situation where if you have the luxury of a high discard rate, your really gutsy or especially good you go wide open on your aperture and turn them into colorful background.

stop parking your car on course!

yesterday was an exercise in frustration at times, because I lined up sequence of shots where I'd go from relatively high shutter speed at the switchbacks, and then while panning and chasing the car, dial down the speed to take the panning shot shortly after. sometimes, that just didn't happen the way I wanted it to. oh well. maybe this upcoming weekend will net better results.. :)

I typically set Av for Wide Open and Tv for my slow shutter speed setting, so I can quickly go back and forth between Frozen and Panning. Sometimes not Wide Open, but a F/Stop that allows me to shoot at around say 1/400th, to get some blurring.

But when those toilets are in the BG, Wide Open is often where I end up.

Since you can't change the background very easily, sometimes the BG DOES determine my angle(s).

Observant buyers will have noticed that I did sometimes removed toilets, workers and light stanchions from the BG of their purchases. :D

... you DID captured some great moments!

Wow, that parking lot has really deteriorated from the last time I was there (admitedly been a number of years). It looks as bad as Lone Pine! :D

Like everything it's practice. have to be honest I have never tried to change shutterspeeds on the fly.

had I known I was going to do that, I would have changed my dial function in the custom menu to greater steps between clicks.

take the sequence here with Max : http://www.ikonique.com/SDtour3_2011/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

pics 9, 10, 11 where taken at 1/1250 using Tv, and then #12 was dialed down while panning, down to 1/100. it involved quite a bit of frantic clicking with the finger while trying to keep the target centered (far from always being successful).

what settings do you guys usually use to shoot? I know for stuff like bird photography, I use Av, but Tv seems to be a better way to control the action in auto-x.

Isn't there a couple settings on your mode dial for user specified setups so you can set all the appropriate modes for each situation? One of the things I give up on my T1i.

If I were shooting with my T1i, I'd do this: Go to Tv and see what metering you want for your high-speed shots (i.e. the shutter speed that gets you near your max aperture for the exposure level you want) and just roll the thumb/finger dial between the two shutter speeds and let the camera work out the aperture. This way you can keep your eye in the viewfinder.

The reason to note the high-speed shutter value that gets you near max aperture is so you don't dial it further than your aperture can compensate.

no more dial

pretty sure I can program it to swap though. I need to read through more of the custom menu options.
