Cal Club Solo has arranged for Roger Johnson to come to our area the weekend of November 5th and 6th for a Course Design School that will also serve as Safety Steward Training or Recertification.

In case you’re not familiar with Roger, he’s the guy from Houston who presents the course design handbook many of us have downloaded and – hopefully – put to great use.

The program will include three to four hours of classroom presentation along with answers to any of your questions, then we’ll move to large back lot at California Speedway to set up a course, demonstrating the principals discussed earlier… and setting up for the fun of running the course on Sunday.

So this is more geared towards people that wanna learn to design a AX course or people that want to improve driving skills?

I'm assuming you'll say both, but I'm assuming its slanted more in one direction over ther other the way the thread was started?

this course is geared towards learning proper course design skills and also a safety steward training. In my experience both are needed to have a smooth and safe race weekend. I highly recommend those who are interested in becoming a course designer or a safety steward to come to this seminar.

*i'm registered and can't wait to hear what this guy has to say! Everytime I decide to design a course I go over his PDF manual that is available online. I know my courses have been hit or miss so i know i will learn more at this seminar

Being new to the sport, is there any tenure that is required to get involved with these types of activities during local events?

I'm not sure if there is a *requirement* that you're experienced in Solo or another form of motorsports for either aspect, but being a Solo Safety Steward (SSS) is a serious responsibility, and in general you have to request the application from your Divisional Solo Safety Steward, who screens for an appropriate background.

As for course designers, quality courses are the highest priority of our region - after safety - so we generally look for people who have at least a couple years of experience with autocross.

That said, if there are available entries we're happy to have people interested in learning about both positions.

I don't want newbies designing courses nor being Solo Safety Stewards. That's just common sense. That level of experience is measured in years not events.

But there is a different question here. Is there an entry cap? Because the course design seminar is something I'd like to attend even though I'd love to attend even though I'd probably never volunteer to design a course (too much work). Same for a newbie, they could benefit from and enjoy learning course design theory from the Roger Johnson, but it may be a couple of years before they are ready to take responsibility for a course. I know SSS's are in, so I'm not really asking for Stacey and I. I'm more trying to judge whether we should encourage newbies to attend with caveats that experience is necessary before we start letting them take the roles. Or if we should gently steer them away.

Is the plan still to record the class, and make it available via DVD? I'd like to get my SSS license back, but just never seem to be in town for the classes.

There is a cap. The hotel meeting room is limited, though if we start pushing the limit of chairs that are currently available I believe we can arrange for more.

Still, it certainly isn't *unlimited.*

I encourage everyone interested to sign up, and we'll adjust the entrant list accordingly. Our crack registrar will probably have to contact some people if he doesn't recognize their names.

I'll add that while we are doing on-line payment for this event, no one will be charged until November 3rd, after the cancellation deadline. There is no penalty for signing up early and it will help me with logistics!

Can I, Hi Ly, register for the class? Even though I know that I am NOT good enough to be either the SSS or a Course Designer. I still NEED help with the course walk let alone designing one. I just want to know what involves "behind the scene"/philosophy of the course designing work. I think it might help me going faster ..Please let me know. Thanks

You are confusing two separate things. The course design/safety school mentioned in this thread is on November 5th and 6th. The event in late November is a regularly scheduled practice (Friday)/Ladies School (Saturday)/Autocross Sunday (duh).

Oh ok, I think your right, Yet when I click on the calendar link for more details it mentions the Course class & says 11.5/6.11 yet I was clicking on the ladies event for info & then registered for the Course class according to the link i clicked.

Yes it is confusing ....

So according to my paperwork I printed out by clicking on the ladies event & following the links for it I registered for the class?!?!?!

Well I am not female , so that wont work anyways.... But then again it seems I am registered.

Ok, I think I see my confusion now.

I click on the Nov 25th practice & tried to register & then being its still a month away it wont let me register for that event. yet there is another event that is not listed on the sites calendar on Nov,5/6,11 & thats what popped up, but being I was following the link for the 25th it threw me off.

Should be less confusing for new guys still learning the system around here.

Oh well, fine....... until when can i back out of this course design class?

& the ladies school is just sat right other wise the event is for everyone?
