April Autocross weekend PHOTO/VIDEO thread

Post by Davin Swanson »

Best run from Sunday: 72.019 s. My first weekend with my new datalogging setup. Worked fine on Saturday, but for some reason OBDII data wasn't recorded on sunday, so I don't have tach or throttle data. I think it also wasn't using the iPhone accelerometer and was using GPS-derived accelerations instead, which is why the G-meter looks so hosed. Technology! Bah!

Design of the video with the driver cam in the bottom middle blatantly stolen from Jeff Stuart.

Happy to be your inspiration ;-)

Here's my fastest run in practice... I spent all day on Saturday practicing my shifting, and then did two runs at the end without shifting that were my fastest two. I guess I need to work on my shifting more....

I'll put together a highlight video of Tom and myself flailing about all the times the shifter knob fell off mid-run, but I'm too tired right now. Same goes for Sunday runs, I'll get around to them tomorrow.

so i found this disturbing.... past by 3-4 course workers WITH red flags and non of them flagged me down. Tristan Littlehale was the course worker who flagged me down as he was experienced to know that I was too close to the car in front of me.

Well, I forgot I didn't have the right camera on for Tom's runs on Saturday, so all you get is me fumbling with the shifter knob.
In my defense, I'm not used to reverse being on the left (it's to the right in the RX-8). I kept missing 2nd by putting it into the reverse channel on my downshifts.

And here's my fastest run from Sunday, a 66.4xx. Unfortunately I coned all my runs, on this run it was the second cone on the right after the long slalom (with 3 pointer cones).

Maybe it's the wide angle lens but I wouldn't have flagged you down in the slalom either. That didn't seem that close at all.

maybe the shift knob wouldn't fall off if you weren't banging it around so much.

or maybe that is one of those fancy BMW safety features...it prevents you from shifting if it thinks you don't know what to do.

It was justfied at the slalom. I was working the first right hander and was already predicting a red flag at around the 180.
Was not close enough by me though for me to throw a flag yet.

I dunno Marshall... I know I can't be the only one who feels uneasy trying to look ahead and see another car in my line of sight. IMO each car on course should be 1 section away from the next car... Not one element. At that point I feel there should of been a red flag before the slalom.

Sure it's distracting to the driver but so are a lot of other things that you don't get re-runs for. The spacing I saw in your video didn't look to be a safety issue until about when you got flagged.

From my vantage, I would have flagged him one station earlier. When he was actaully flagged, I was jumping up and down yelling for a flag :)

If you encounter what is an unsafe condition to you, you always have the right to stop and ask for a rerun, you don't have to wait for a red flag.
