Anyone want a really challenging, cone-intensive course?

Mark, if the second part of you post is what you seek, you only need to drive a bit south every 4 weeks or so to wet your appetite.Mark DeShon wrote:Anyone want a really challenging, cone-intensive course?

Does the course need to be set up on Friday? If it can be done Saturday i would be willing to give it a try.

If I could start setup at like, 8 am on Friday I'd be interested, otherwise I can't get the day off.Steve O'Blenes wrote:Does the course need to be set up on Friday? If it can be done Saturday i would be willing to give it a try.

Re: Seeking course designer
Back in the day Saturday early 6 AM setups was the norm right? Pretty stressing if you are very particular of how you want the layout and elements as well as going over it again for safety check. I could help early AM if you need a hand.Steve O'Blenes wrote:Does the course need to be set up on Friday? If it can be done Saturday i would be willing to give it a try.

Re: Seeking course designer
Sunrise is 6:39am. 1 hour, 51 minutes before first car leaves the line.
Sunset is 5:33. There is 43 minutes for change over.
Saturday morning setup is doable, but not ideal.

Back when we used to do this, cones were often on the ground well before first light. Sunrise brought fine tuning.KJ Christopher wrote:Sunrise is 6:39am. 1 hour, 51 minutes before first car leaves the line.
Also it wasn't just a hand full of people doing it as their work assignment, but all hands on deck by the sponsoring club, as nearly EVERY event was club sponsored.

Re: Seeking course designer
Craig is right, we used to do it all the time, and on Championship days since practices were rare. Use a previous course design that required a minimum of cones as a basis with a change or two. I think the gate opens at 6:00, a few people there to get the motorhome and get cones out would get the work exemption. Then volunteers as they arrive to help with cone and course marking, grid set up. Should be plenty of time to even allow course walking, but that is optional for a practice IMHO. With 12 runs, you can use your first as your course walk.Craig Naylor wrote:Back when we used to do this, cones were often on the ground well before first light. Re: Seeking course designer
Though exceptionally rare... it's also not completely unheard of for either a practice, or championship to do a parade lap, instead of walks. (admittedly, I only recall one parade lap that wasn't in the rain...)Rick Brown wrote:Craig Naylor wrote:KJ Christopher wrote:Should be plenty of time to even allow course walking, but that is optional for a practice IMHO. Re: Seeking course designer
We also used to routinely have mini road race courses with no creativity or choice of line, like somebody drove the motorhome around the lot tossing cones out and making it up as we went.... Oh yeah... That's what happened. Sometimes. We had a few good morning of courses too.

Re: Seeking course designer
Steve is 100% correct. Sometimes we had good courses. The caliber of the the courses we have enjoyed over the past 10 or so years is much higher that we used to have .
We now have a course designer for Friday afternoon. Now we need a few more helpers to help set up. I will count as your work assignment.
