why does the shifter paddle rattle around? is it slipping out/re-engaging 2nd gear multiple times before it jumps out of gear or is the car hitting bumps and giggling the shift paddle back into neutral?

Could be that the 2nd gear dogs are rounded off, might have to eventually replace 2nd gear/rebuild trans if it continues to be a problem. APE will undercut the dogs to make them stick in gear better.

Looked to me like it was jumping around with bumps, but still not sure if it was actually moving or it was the camera jiggling. Didn't realize it was in a fixed position, though it was like my kart paddle shifter which is tied to the steering wheel and rotates with it so your fingers are always on it. Of course the kart wheel is not removable.

Does the class allow air or electric shifters? I've heard of this one mentioned by a couple of motorcycle friends: http://www.pingelonline.com/prodcat/ele ... ifters.asp

The paddle does float a bit. But I don't think it puts any force on the shifter cable.

Second gear slipping out matched rev's getting into peak torque. I think second gear has rounded off. I think to replace 2nd gear it's a split the case full disassembly kinda deal, but I'm not certain of that!

No electronic or air shifters in FM. You can set up a mechanical throttle lift. The ones I've heard of are pretty tough to keep adjusted dead-on.
