Wanted: casual cheap family autox car

Post by Adrian Covert »

Looking for a car that is relatively safe and low maintenance while also being enjoyable to autocross. Must have 4 real seats and enough room for some gear. Cheap is more important than competitive but both would be ideal. I've been searching Craigslist looking at endless horrifying RSXs, and Celica GT and finally decided to see if anyone has some leads or ideas to share?

I like the idea of the Celica, but going with Mazda you get their support so a Mazda 3 or 2000- Protege 2.0

I like the idea of a Mazda 3 since it could be a lot more modern car than a Celica at this point.

Have you seen what the guy in the STF Fit pulls off?

Yaris' have done well in HS too.

Yaris seems possible as well. I am really surprised at how expensive some of the 15 year old crap boxes I'm seeing are. Doubt that a recent yaris would be a lot more and defiantly less expensive to "fix up" to roadworthy status.

Get a regular family car & co-drive a much funner car w/ someone - arrive & drive can't be beat! :D

Jack & Kai have started running the new Ford Fiesta in HS. Looks fun. John Lugod has been testing the new Focus (SVT?) for STX or something. Hit those guys up.

Yeah the SVT is probably not a class leading car at this point, and from what I've heard likes to eat motor mounts (and has a Ford interior)!

I think a manual IS would fit the requirements. I saw a decent one but it was too expensive. Do you know of one that's available?

I occasionally look but nothing to point you to. Whenever i do look, there seem to be more good examples up in the bay vs here in socal.

I was really steering away from BMWs sure to maintenance but I keep coming back to them. I've looked at a few and they vary enormously in options and condition making finding a good one time consuming. Also aiming for stock, due to the cost of mods, but if I could find a mechanically sound E46 I guess the ongoing costs might be low with high up front for the suspension.
