Garmin Virb X action cam

Post by James Yom »

For sale is my Garmin Virb X action cam.

The great thing about this camera vs the GoPro (other than the new and pricey gopro 5) is that it has a GPS sensor and accelerometers to record info like speed, forces, etc, and overlay it on your video with their software without another 3rd party app. The awesome thing you can do with the Garmin that you still can't do with any GoPro is that you can connect a wireless Bluetooth OBD2 unit to get vehicle data like RPM, A/F ratio, brake activation, coolant temp, etc and also overlay all this on your video.

Here is an example of what it can do:

Excuse my wobbly mount in that video - not the camera's fault!

I should add that I have the XE. The XE adds Image Stabilization, which actually doesn't work very well for autocross, so buying the X like James' puts you at no disadvantage to the XE. I have the Image Stabilization always turned off.

I also run their Rugged Cable with an external mic. Battery life is much better than my old Go Pro.

This is a great camera at a great price.

Is there a way to time your run? Or set a start and finish?
Any apps that work with it for Iphone, like harry's lap timer?
How quickly can you transfer a run to your phone to review it?
I'm about done with GroPro
Thanks

No, and no.

Virb has an App that you can view the camera via wifi.

You can just view the runs via the App, or put the MicroSD card in your phone (unless you have a crappy Iphone).

Check the App store for the Virb App.

I'm interested in the camera. What will come with it? Any of the mounting accessories?

Thanks,

Depending on your car. It seems the initialisation handshake between the dongle and the camera isn't as robust as with most OBD2 apps. So even if an app will read the data, there's no guarantee that the Garmin will.

Cheers.

Thanks,
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I will have mounting hardware for you. One curved mount and one flat mount.
