Totalled 10AE Miata...What to do?

Post by Sebastian Rios »

Shauna was hit in her 10AE Miata, it has been declared a total loss.

Seems like mostly cosmetic damage, front and rear bumpers, maybe subframe, not sure. Drives fine. Do you think the insurance co. will pay extra because it is a special edition?

Should I try to buy it back and part it out? Maybe advertise it to Spec Miata/IT guys? Or just take the money and run?

Sorry to hear :(

Take pictures, get a detailed description of the car. Show all of this to Todd Cameron at SD's solo this Sunday. Todd worked in the insurance industry for 15+ years. He's a good guy and gives great advise. He runs a black Mazda 3 in FSP.

Is there a way to get money and the car? I wonder if Mike's car is a good daily driver though, Shauna commutes ~45 miles/day.

I hope Shauna is OK!

First, you'll need to negotiate a total loss price with the insurance co. This is the fair market value of the car. They will make an offer and you will say "in your dreams" until that fair market value is really fair market value. They will start low and you will tell them how clean this yours' was, and that it was once owned by the Queen of England which naturally increases it's value. Once that is settled, you will offer to buy a car back and negotiate that price. You'll then stress what a crummy, worthless car the Miata is and that no self respecting junk yard would be at all interested in a stupid little car with only two seats. Then they'll just subtract your purchase price for the wreck from your settlement price, cut you a check for the balance, and then you will re-register the car as a salvage vehicle. It will require a light and safety inspection before it can be registered. Hope this helps. Good luck with the negotiation.

If you and Shauna (and David) were to come over to CASOC, as new members, you'd be entitled to the deluxe new member package which includes professional consultation on all aspects of dealing with insurance companies, appraisers, DMV, and the salvage process.

Sorry to hear, hope Shauna is ok. When I totaled my Evo (Moderate cosmetic front end damage. But the damn aluminum front end costs a fortune to fix  ) My Insurance company at the time (Wawanessa), got three sources of what the market value of the vehicle (model, trim level, mileage, condition) was worth in the zip code I had it registered in, and gave me a a check based on the average of the three. Wasn't too shabby, in the end I made out ahead and made money on the car selling the aftermarket parts I pulled off. So I suppose you can try that, or just call Mr. Tom Berry.

Ended up taking their offer and letting them have the car. It was a generous offer in my opinion, much more than I would have listed if I were selling it.
Settlement will pay off the truck and leave enough for a nice NA.

I'm hoping I can find a clean body that needs a rebuild for super cheap, I would then turbo it and have a fun street car.

Not so much for street use but $750.00 is cheap and with a turbo motor it would make a killer FP car and with a GM LSx it would be an awesome track car. }:)
