Used/New Travel Trailer WTB

Post by Pete Loney »

Looking for a new/used travel trailer.
Supposedly, someone, Maybe Brett N. had an airstream for sale?? I searched but did not see a thread on here.

Some constraints:

- Under 4000lbs, dry
- <= 24 feet long with tongue
- double axle preferred
- Hybrid is OK or not
- Budget - ~ $8,000 - $15,000

Something like this hybrid, but this one had thousands of $'s of fixes needed., AC broken, Tent material needs reparir throughout, counter tops laminate peeling and more...

Have a 20' Lazy Daze Motorhome for sale, only 30k miles. Can't tow your Miata to Nationals behind another trailer.

Not the purpose I am going for.

It's for vacations without the race car :)

The tow vehicle would be my Ridgeline....

That's a hilarious movie. My favorite part is Lucille cooking dinner in the trailer as Desi drives what is purported to be the Aspen pass from Twin Lakes into Aspen.

P.S. Pete, you don't have to tow the Miata... you could tow the Ridgeline instead!

As far as I'm concerned, a convertible is the only way to go. Maybe a bigger Miata? And having an orchestra travel with you makes the trip even better!

Last I saw, sale was pending on Bret's Airstream. And it was waaaaaaaay out of your budget. But pics and info are still on his Facebook page.

I think his ambulance that's been converted to an RV might still be for sale though.

What is your intended use? Multiple-night? How far are you going to tow? Hookups or not? How many people/kids? How interested are you in a fixer-up-er?

We just got a travel trailer about 18 months ago - got a 16-footer that sleeps four (a double and a pair of bunks), has a stove, microwave, A/C, fridge, and a bathroom with shower. It's big enough to work as "indoors" but small enough to be "camping" - as in out-and-about where we're staying, not lounging around in it all day watching satellite TV on a flat screen TV. It weighs about 2800 ready-to-roll and we tow it with the Odyssey. I also use it as my base of operations for my astrophotography weekends where I'm in it all night long operating the telescope and cameras no matter the temperature, and sleep/rest/process images during the day.

Most small travel trailers are designed for hookups and have small tanks (fresh, grey, and black). Toy haulers usually have larger tanks because they expect you're going off-roading in the middle of nowhere. Slide-outs are really nice but add cost, complexity, and weight.

The place Will listed has a 2013 13' Bobcat on sale for $11k

While inexpensive, it's only twice what I'm asking for the '20 Lazydaze Motorhome.

Ok, I rounded a little bit. I'm asking for $7k. Come check it out in S.D. while at the Tour.

It's a 1990 Lazy Daze 22' (I said 20' above I was wrong) Class C motorhome. It has 30981 miles on it. Chevy G30 Chassis w/ 5.7L & either a TH400 or 4L80E Trans. (can't recall if it's a 3 or 4 speed.)

Fully contained (clear, grey, black water tanks) flushing toilet and shower. Cab over Queen, rear twin Twin/King option. It's white w/ Blue w/ Blue. Micro, 4 burner stove, LP/Elec/Battery Ref/Freezer. Roof A/C, multiple deep cell batteries... list goes on, and on.
It has 4 (of 6) new tires, w a new fuel tank / lines / pump etc about a year ago. Has not left San Diego in about 10 years, but is moved to keep parts lubricated. Only known need is new carpet. About a dozen years ago a case of Coke exploded inside out in Yuma in the middle of the summer, and stained a large section bad. It wasn't discovered for hours... thought it was cleaned up, but the stains were permanent.

Link to floor plan: http://www.lazydaze.com/Floorplans/235tkb.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Couple of pic's from the internet of the same floor plan (ours is blue) Only dif other than color, in '90 the carpet runs the entire length of the MH, and did not have a vinyl floor in the middle section.

Nice.

We are trying to keep things low maint. and smaller so we can keep it next to my garage.
Adding another even older vehicle with a motor is not in plan right now.
Targeting 17 ft. and under for the length of the body of whatever we get.

Maybe I'm just an old curmudgeon Pete, but here's a little food for thought before you pull the trigger.

Consider this:
  • For the $6500 purchase price, you can stay about 100 nights in a 3* or better hotel if you use a service like Priceline or Hotwire
If you stay in a hotel, you could load up your Miata and actually have fun getting there and while your there
Add in the cost of the campground and the additional gas to tow a trailer, and a nice hotel is paid for
The second happiest day in anyone's life is the day they buy that trailer/boat/airplane........the happiest is when they sell it.

On the plus side:
  • You'll have all those fond memories of being cooped up in a small trailer
Those ford memories of packing and cleaning it, not to mention the daily memory of watching it deteriorate while you're storing it at home
And the memory or hanging out parked with rows of other trailers, meeting new friends, and chatting about all the hassle you went through to get there
The relief you'll feel when you finally get rid of it
OK, I'll go crawl under my rock now! }:)

Problem is George, that some of the best places you can visit don't have even 1 star motels.
