Okkk so I got carried away - now what class are we?

I was thinking when we get it running we would run FP - but then in very small print bottom of last page "no more then 6 six cage".

I'm not much for rules and built the car to just have the fun and experience of the build...so now we need to figure what what class to put on the side. Is there an out law class? (this is said tong and cheek).

Seriously I am thinking a mod class now - stopped counting cage points at 14. We hope to be out for some time only runs before the end of the year. This is a combined auto-x toy and track day car.

It is a 79 BMW 320-6 2.5lt motor weighs about 2300 lbs. we ran it our first time running SCCA three years ago before the motor failed.

TO - (Time Only) - is technically a class of sorts... no points, trophies, or Year end championships... but anyone can run there.

CSM - (California Street Mod) - Run what you brung class on DOT tires.

CST - (California Street Touring) - run what you brung class on 140TW or greater tires.

IMHO, people should find a real class vs. TO. Sure in TO you can drive in any run group (potentially), but the two things most people come out for are both missing in TO. No competition, and no class social aspect either. Without either of those reasons, whats the point?

The car is fine for prepared class competition. There is no rule i stating that you cannot run more than six attachment points in prepared. You can run no cage or go wild with the extra weight. Originally I was worried about the tubular frame and strut mounts but per the rules that is all legal as well. So just confirm which class the car is listed in and that the engine is original and go have fun. if the engine is not original for the chassis then you can run it in XP.

Thanks Craig - I see and agree with your points on finding a class - the TO running will be mostly to shake down the car and make sure everything is working correctly. Such as - we have changed out the brake master/peddles to Wilwood bias adjustable dual masters, which may effect the class we run in also.
California street classes require the car be street legal - this is not possible unless we move out of the state to register it. It is basically a race car as in no head lights which is another thing to consider. We do have brake lights! :D

Thanks Steve - I will have to re-read the rules again and figure out what I thought I read about the cage. I was thinking that the front could fall under being able to change out the front suspension. Thinking is if you can change out the front suspension then it falls to reason that you would have to modify the chassis/frame to make the mounting points for it.

The engine is bigger then original - the M20 BMW motor is like the early small block Chevy in that from the out side it could be a 265 or a stroked 383. These is a gray market car not brought in the US by BMW that had a 2Lt six in it. We have upped it to a 2.5Lt so if running xp is where we go this is fine because for us it's more about the fun of running then where we finish. :shock: ya right.

we ran Rs3s and Hankook Z214s. At first while shaking it do we will be running Rs3s then if I can we want to run some Hoosiers.

What SCCA road racing class is this built for? There are rules that allow some of the road racing production/GT/ST cars into Auto-x Prepared classes, so maybe that would work for you?

It's only classed in GT3 with a 4 cylinder and not classed anywhere else.

That ball cap hanging from the roll cage puts you in NASCAR. :)

Ed that is a custom mount I was getting tried of stuffing the cap under the seat during runs! LOL :D
