Website latency and connection problems

Post by Mike Simanyi »

Am I the only person who has a problem with the new forums? I regularly have a failed connection or have to refresh the page manually, which occurs 25%+ of the time.

This happens both at my office and at home, so it's neither the computer nor the connection causing the problem.

Oh... and none of this is on Windows Vis-duh.

Actually I've rarely experienced this with the new forums.

Yup. They just don't like you.

My home desktop doesn't like the forums. It struggles to load anything from them. My laptops are all fine with it. I haven't checked the versions, but I'm pretty sure my home desktop will be the oldest explorer version of all my computers.

Maybe its time to update yuor browser?

Do a tracert and see where your problem is.

One way is to open a command window, type TRACERT http://solo2.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and hit return

The problem can be anywhere else along the way.

I use Firefox v3.0.1 at both locations, so that could be the issue... even though it's rippin' fast and consistent on *every other website* I access.

Just a little more info. Glad to hear this isn't a prevailing problem. I'll try accessing the site via embedded IE.

The main http://www.solo2.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; site and the forums.solo2.com are at completely different places. If you want latency to the forums, use the forums.solo2.com.

Oh, and you don't put the http:// at the beginning, just "tracert http://www.solo2.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" or "tracert forums.solo2.com"

Yeah, those details (I did wonder if the forums were hosted somewhere else).

Main point is, the problem is often not at the server and I get this all the time, where people assume it is the server. The typical internet connection goes through quite a few connections.

From work, TRACERT only occasionally shows anything beyond 15ms, and there are very few connections that time out. I'm running it while my browser spins aimlessly, waiting for the page to refresh.

With either imbedded IE in Firefox or IE directly, I still have frequent problems.

The good news is: apparently I'm the only user with this problem.

Edited to add: while posting this message, TRACERT timed out in mzima.net. That's happened on a few other occasions as well. That hop is 4 or 5 hops from the destination, but most of those hops are within mzima.net.

I think they pulled ZIMA off the market years ago. Maybe that explains it.

I guess that's why the destination is vicious.gurge.org.

Something about vicious gurgitation doesn't sound all that appealing...

Oh, and Steve... that's the M version we're talking about. (Cue Gio.)
