SCCA Time trials @ Buttonwillow March 24-25

Post by Toby Larsson »

The first time trial of 2012 will be held at Buttonwillow on March 24&25.

This is one of the better deals to get on a track, $125.00 for one day or $200.00 for both days, transponders are available for rent too. Three sessions per day and no work assignment ;)

Any car that can pass a solo tech, prepared up to and including Street Prepared is ok, cars prepared beyond SP (SM, P M etc) must be able to pass roadrace tech (cage fire system drivers gear etc).

More info here: http://www.calclub.com/time-trials.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Link to sign up: https://www.motorsportreg.com/index.cfm ... 4D088DC400" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hope to see some of you up there, I'll be there Thursday-Sunday for the Super School, with some luck I should run my first club race on Sunday the 25th :D

There are some restrictions re. open cars, rollbars are required if no factory rollbars/hoops are installed. Contact cal club for more info on what open cars are ok.

Karen is doing the Super School also.

We had a great time last year doing this SCCA Time Trials. Buttonwillow is a really great technical track. Good compromise between the high speed and long straights of Willow Springs and the twisty Streets of Willow.

Guide: http://www.trackpedia.com/wiki/Buttonwi ... rack_Guide" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Lap record holder shows you how to run a lap at Buttonwillow, the typical configuration 13:

The hills are a cool feature.

Mako, will you be there too?

Saturday configuration is 27 CW
Sunday configuration is 1 CW

Perfect time for those who usually run with SV to try something other than 13 CW ;)

I've been twice in my car and once for a LeMons race and still haven't run 13 CW. I'll finally get to run 13 CW two weeks though with SV.

I'd go to this, but I'll be at Infineon for my second LeMons race.

Same team/car as last time or different? Did I hear correctly that there's ~170 cars entered!

Yep, same crap-can as last time, assuming we (they) get the engine and rear-end put together in time.

I've heard that the event is full, so that very well could be the case. I haven't been paying too much attention to be honest. It will be nuts for sure.

Shouldn't this be in the EVENTS section? We ARE suppose to be supporting the SCCA Time Trials program. No need to hide it here ... as long as it doesn't conflict of course with our schedule ... which this one doesn't

I put it here because I know how some people feel about promoting a non auto-x event, I don't feel like being part of any more controversial topics.

If you want to move it feel free :thumbup:

Nice video of Jeff S at Buttonwillow last weekend. Broken front sway bar mount made his RX8 a bit loose. He gets distracted near the end of the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eD7lfG7Gt8

So much fun ...

We'll be leaving around 11AM tomorrow, need to get a new log book issued, was told that tech opens at 2PM.

Too bad no one signed up for the TT from here, only 11 cars in the TT group, should be a lot of open track available and only $200.00 for Sat & Sun.

Have fun! I'd come out to help/watch, but we will be in SD so Kencey fan get more seat time before the tour.

Yes & no. It conflicts with San Diego which some of us are running as the last chance to run the surface before National Tour. As if, in my case, that would make a difference.

Danica Zaterman!

Doesn't get much better - 2X 5x 25 minute sessions ... and then a free entry into a Regional event on Sunday ... Practice, Qualifying and 30 minute race

Doing the Super School is by far the most fun I've ever had :thumbup:

Every person involved from registration, tech, emergency and all the instructors are so friendly and encouraging you just can not have a bad time. 6 hours of track time doesn't hurt either.

Both Karen and I got our license and are running our first club race today, one practice session, one qualifying and a thirty minute race in the afternoon. It's raining here right now and will probably continue for the remainder of the day, should be interesting for a rookie :shock:

If any one of you want to get on track I would highly recomend doing it this way.

Is a hardtop on a Miata good enough, or will a roll bar be required?

Some snap shots from this incredibly fun weekend: http://public.fotki.com/makofoto/2012-r ... er-school/

Toby won his RS class ... beating the head Instructor ... who picked the wrong tires, ie. the weather held and we had a dry track ... and he set a new RS Track Tecord!

He was 4th over all, out of 20 starters.

Karen was 14th ... after a spirited battle with a SSC Honda FIT, that set a new Track Record, an HP car and a STL Miata. I was thrilled she kept it on the track while a lot of others had offs.

Here Karen passes Toby on the last lap ... of Qualifying. :D

Video from inside Karen's car: http://vimeo.com/39254351" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... pretty much Toby's only misstep in three days of racing

btw ... the fastest speed we saw all weekend from Karen's Miata was 96 mph just before Sunset corner ... and Philip R. says that was likely a glitch in the GPS data recorder. She was hitting a little over 7K in 4th. So the Auto Cross at Lone Pine is faster ... we were easily hitting 110 in Mark Coleman's STI.

On Toby's video, he's just hitting 90 at that spot, so Karen is no doubt doing less:

Start of the Race ... Toby on pole ... Karen starting I believe 15th out of 20. They were being very strict about having proper order during the previous Starts, so Karen is taken by surprise that they weren't going to do another go around: http://vimeo.com/39257329

I happen to know that car was originally bought for RallyXing. Looks like the car knows that too.
