RE: Aerial Video of Sept 23 Autocross

Post by UpThere Video »

Hello everyone!
JL Slade signing in here as suggested by the announcer yesterday regarding the aerial videos I took yesterday throughout most of the day.

As the nearly 6 hours of video is offloading from the camera to the PC, I'd like to begin a discussion of what I do and find out if it works within y'all's preferences or if you have any suggestions.

The set up has full control for zoom, pan, and tilt. To date I've generally chosen to track one vehicle at a time through it's an entire run. With the pace of the races, this means I record only every third or fourth car, but with the multiple runs, I do end up with more than 1/4-1/3 of the drivers. What this means is that despite recording for nearly the entire day, I may not have video of one of your runs. It also means that unless I'm tracking one of the cars that spins out, I won't have all the spin-outs or those types more "exciting" moments.

I did have an unexpected issue near the end of the day with the heat. The camcorder began to overheat such that the last two sets are only partially recorded as I had to repeatedly turn off the camera and wait a few minutes for it to cool. I am already designing a shade cover for the set up which should be available by the time the excessive heat hits Fontana or Southern CA again (hopefully not till next summer).

So here's what I'll be doing with the footage today. I am going to go through it and list all the car numbers I've recorded and I'll post those here, probably tomorrow. I will also be putting together a 5-10 minute video to post on both my website and on youtube for your enjoyment. If you find that a run of yours is listed but not on the short video, email me through the link on my website and I'll clip your run(s) out and set up a link to it for you.

I will not be charging anyone, though I will be putting a PayPal donation click for anyone who feels inclined to say thank you in a monetary way.

For anyone wanting to see some of the older Autocross I video'd in Boise, please visit http://UpThereVideo.com/sports.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I will provide a direct link to the CSCC video as soon as it is prepared.

I'd like to see two stationary videos from that perspective overlayed to create "ghost cars" to compare runs!

Good morning. It is 2:22am and I am here to provide a quick update. After years of reliable and dedicated service, my PC gave me it's first and apparently also it's last BlueScreenofDeath. I've spent upwards of 16hours trying to get a recovery to no avail. I will see about replacing it tomorrow and then get the new one up and running with all the immediate updates, program installs, and such. Looks like I'll be a day to a day and a half behind the above mentioned schedule. My apologies.

G'd mornin' folks! We have a computer that works! Yeah!

Here's the poop n the scoop, Group 1 and Group 2 video clips, about 10 minutes worth is converting to FLV file right now and should be online early afternoon. The list by car number of the runs that I shot for Group 1 & 2 are listed below. As I get to the next groups this afternoon and evening I'll add more lists and post another 10 min +/- video of some of those clips.

As a whole I am pleased with the way the new camera and panhead worked. Autocross is one of the more difficult events to cover, obviously because of the speed and size of course, which is why I love to do it, I love challenges. Anyway, though generally pleased, I'm only satisfied with about 60% of the runs I recorded. I think if I am able to organize earlier and better with the officials and course designer so I can set up in a more optimum position most everything will be remedied.

So, I will not be putting a donation click anywhere for this race day as I don't feel it's much better than hobby video with the operator learning curve evident. Let me know if you want to see your run(s), and please accept in advance that some runs are not as smoothly recorded as the ones I'm putting in the clips video. I look forward to practicing more this next weekend with the Bimmer autocross and should be fully up to par for your October event, if I'm still in LA which I expect I will be. (I'm supposed to be down here on an extended vaca, but think I'm lovin' it enough to stay)

Without further ado, the list for Groups 1 & 2.

No, the last race I did was the first leg of the Boise RallyX in 2010. I had some shoulder injury that kept me from doing my thing for two years.

Okay the video is uploading now, in HiDef so if you have a slow connection, be sure to pause and let it load in to avoid annoying buffering. If you're on a smart phone, or you just prefer Youtube, I'll upload the file our youtube site this evening some time. Youtube reads your device and offers the appropriate video quality. The same basic timing for tomorrow's Group 3-5 videos and lists.

Your welcome, I hope to become a regular addition to your races.

I have 2 runs for 54, not on the highlights, though. So what I am imagining is that I'll set up a private link page for the requested individual runs and I'll post the link here, rather than clutter up the sports page with dozens of 1-2 minute clips. Let me get through tonight and tomorrow with the later groups, and I'll start the extra pages Friday and over the weekend. Stay tuned for links.

I did. I am working on those right now. They should arrive in roughly the same time frame as today's except tomorrow, with the list and then a link a ten minute vid.

I could post so many runs. As the day progressed, my operator errors really reduced, and compared to the vids the old camcorder offered, I'm a happy camper all in all. For a first bash with a new camera and panhead, the heat, the bee that decided to love from time to time (no stings, just very friendly so some jerked video from time to time) and autocross??? I think there's hope. :)

Well to rewatching and editing Sunday afternoon..........
