You can check out the national results to see what finished where. Mine is an 2003 AP1, the last of the 9k cars, but any year should be fine for SK1. The CR appears to be the one to have but you'll probably have a hard time finding one.

It is all course dependent, AP1, AP2 and CR can all get it done. Nice thing with the CR is it can win without all the tweaks, 2008 Champ was all stock. :o Bad thing about a CR is the price and no AC/Audio for the ultimate package.

History shows the AP1 having the edge, and they can be had cheap. Think of it as a Miata for a man.

GRM reviews that in the same issue; says the mistakes made on the '08 are fixed. Wish I'd driven it at track day.

IMHO, the CR is probably the best of all of them, but if it's only for local stuff, a 02-03 should be really good as well. You're going to run out of second a lot in an AP2, so I'd only consider one if it's a CR. The 02-03s have stiffer springs than the 00-01s and maybe a tiny bit more power...

If you were looking for the ultimate S2k, I'd have to say the CR....might be a few at Jim Reeves.....off of the 605 and Southland (?).....in Long Beach.....they had a bunch of them there - all colours black, blue, yellow (and white?)...and they seemed to be sitting there......not moving......last checked in around July... With the current low car sales, there might be some left for a good price???

My thoughts are that the CR would be the fastest once set up.......a little bit course-dependent because of the gearing but not as much as the earlier AP2's........sometimes the AP1 will still have the gearing advantage.

However with Nebraska and concrete.....might be better to have the old 'vette for As .....dunno......may be course-dependent there again.

I had both the AP1 and AP2. I enjoy the AP1 more, but it was more challenging to drive fast. The AP2 has a perfect transmission, I think the best gear ratios ever offered for a street car, but 2nd gear dies at 59 mph.

For local events, it is a matter of just running the right wheels/tires and the right driver, AP1/AP2/CR can get it done.

I think for Nationals on concrete, the S2000 is not going to have it easy anymore, the C4 will be the right car.

Huge price difference between a CR and an AP1

I am not sure about that, looking at results from past natls at Forbes field, as well as other natls events on concrete (Atwater/Wendover/etc) there is little support for your theory. The S2K was able to run heads up with, and beat, the C4 just as often as the C4 beat the S2K - this is why the S2K was moved to AS with the C4. ;) And I would not say the S2K had it easy at HPT, the C4 did win one of those three years. :D

let's see, I've only had 5 S2000's... :gpower:

I agree with what people have been saying - #1 is the CR, #2 is the 02-03 - but all could get it done in the right hands with the right setup. The 01 is okay, too, but the suspension is slightly more twitchy, and a plastic rear window. 00's had a few first year issues, which were minor, but also the plastic rear window.

I liked my AP2's tiny touch more torque, and the gearing was a benefit on some courses. But I LOVED the 9K redline of the AP1's.

And I'll tell you setup really can make or break the S2K. Do it wrong, and you'll induce more spins than a night of heavy drinking. Do it right, and it is FREAKING AMAZING. I won in Jason Saini / Juliann Pokorny's S2000 in 2004 (and hadn't driven the car until I pulled to the start line), and also drove the ex-Andy McKee S2000. Insane. Absolutely insane! I've driven a lot of them, and those two cars were absolutely in their own league!

Looks like the rumors (power bump, better under the curve, LSD) were true about the new Cayman, probably the best AS car now.... At least looks that way on paper...
