Insane. Has anyone had any experience on the Ring? I was lucky enough to get two laps in a GT3 RS but I've yet to drive on it myself. I'll be back there next summer if anyone is interested maybe we could do a meet there, maybe do a few laps in a rental }:)

I've done a dozen laps in a diesel A-class Mercedes rental car, and two laps in an e30 M3 Sport Evolution

Re: Nurburgring Laps
I've been driven around numerous times by my Formula Vee racer buddy in his Saab 99 ... in '72 ... while he learned the Ring. He went on to win his German Championship Vee race there, on his way to winning the German National Championship that year.
Here is our "Team," in 1971 ... bunch of long hair american kids, campaigning against the Germans. The fellow behind the tire is our driver Tom Morstein-Marx. The little kid to his right, is his little brother ... a professor of Classics at UCSB now. Tom himself is a civil engineer up in Sacramento taking care of our waterways.

Be careful. I've heard lots of stories about rental agencies that assign an employee to do nothing all day but write down license plate numbers of their cars, so they can void your rental contract. Once they've identified you, they can do all sorts of nasty things to you, even if you don't crash their car. There are companies that will rent you a track-ready car and insurance for your tour of the 'Ring. Here's a list of a few. http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/carhire.htmlI'll be back there next summer if anyone is interested maybe we could do a meet there, maybe do a few laps in a rental
Also, here are c ouple of useful sites for logistical planning if you're serious about going to the 'Ring:

Have fun! I'm planning to do this with my son when he graduates from high school. It's definitely on my bucket list!

Re: Nurburgring Laps
Thanks for the links! The last time I was there I had an Audi A3 tdi from Sixt and I had a discussion over this matter with one of the regulars (it was the driver of the GT3 in fact). He said that as long as I didn't sign any sort of waiver from Sixt (he mentioned most companies have it in their paperwork that prohibits the vehicle from driving the Ring) I was clear to drive on it because it is considered a public road, seemed odd to me but I figured he knew more about it then I did. Still, I didn't drive on it just to play it safe. I will email Sixt about the issue before I head out there next time and of course renting a race car is always a safe option.Kurt Rahn wrote:Be careful. Re: Nurburgring Laps
Best thing about that is you get insurance included (at least the companies I looked at). Have a great time, and want to hear about it when you get back!of course renting a race car is always a safe option.

Re: Nurburgring Laps
I have spent two days on the NordSchleife back in 2004 in a euro spec M3 with DSG. Best track on earth! Couldn't get enough.
Here's another way to get 'safe' drives - I went with the BMW club who had arranged for the trip. The closed the track to the public, so it was effectively a 'private' event. BMW provided the vehicles. Other clubs might offer a similar program.
I want to go back.

Re: Nurburgring Laps
I went last Winter, I rented a prepped Renault R32 , cage, race seats, big brakes. The guy that I rented the car from showed me the track in a NEW M3 then I did about 10 laps.
I was super Lucky though because the weather was perfect and there was almost nobody there .... I had to wayt for other cars by the gates . all I can say it has nothing to do with PC driving the ting. The barriers are SOOO close . Everybody should go !!!

Re: Nurburgring Laps
Doug and I drove there two different times. We had so much fun. We want to go again some time in the future. We drove a Scirocco and a Ford Fiesta. If you go, drive the video simulator car at the museum. There is also a 3D map of all the turns at the museum. Try the game Gran Turismo before you go. The game shows a very good visual of the course. The video simulator at the museum is Gran Turismo also, but it is so much more like real driving.
Besides the driving, the area is also so beautiful. It is very close to the Rhine and Mosel Rivers.

I was hoping you had an early shot at the new DSG. The SMG wasn't that good.Stephen Yeoh wrote:Thanks Bob. I meant SMG II.Bob Beamesderfer wrote:Stephen Yeoh wrote:I have spent two days on the NordSchleife back in 2004 in a euro spec M3 with DSG.
