You're missing a few ... that involve girls trying to make a living. Once they shut down you fall asleep in your car ... and are then already, dressed and all to drive to the Park. A lot of us stayed at Country Club. Further from Heartland then I thought it would be ... but that's were most of the nicer places are ... and it's still only a 10 minute+ drive.

Everything is close. Just Priceline something 2.5* or better. I'm pretty sure they don't have 4* in Topeka, and 3* might be few and far between.

I stayed at the Candelight. Nice pool and spa. Close enough to the event yet far enough away to get some rest if you need to. Also closer to Club Orleans than some...

Jason:

The closest hotel is the Super 8. However, last year I stayed at the Capitol Plaza and it is a fantastic hotel. The Best Western is also very good, not too far away and quiet.

Best for being a nice place- Capital Plaza Very convenient for the banquets
Best for being good and having character - Senate Luxury Suites Older elegance.
Good value. Candlewood and Clubhouse Inn, these are two of my fav places to stay

Most hotels are close enough. The Senate Luxury and Capital Plaza are nearer the old downtown, but an easy drive on SW Topeka Blvd. Most of the other hotels are near Wanamaker and the good thing about those is that it is smack dab where many restaurants and stores are. If you need a Walmart, Best Buy, Steak and Shake, etc.

I stayed at the Clubhouse in '06 and for about the same $ at the Capitol Plaza in '07. The Plaza was nicer, but they overbooked and bumped us one night when we traveled back and forth between the Pro and Nats. They made it right by putting us up at the Hyatt for free for one night.
I think I'll try Priceline this year.

Holiday Inn (Fairlawn) has a cool pool, with 3-story tall waterslide. About a mile further away than the hotels on Wanamaker, but less traffic.

The Super 8 is probably full (usually fills up in October).

It's hard to find a hotel farther away than 15 minutes.

I'm not sure I'd stay at either the Plaza Inn, Regency Inn, or Traveller's Inn. Besides the construction going on behind them (connecting Kansas Ave to the freeway onramp just below the hotels), they just have never seemed like the kind of place you'd like to stay.

Candlelight has a strip bar within stumbling distance (or did).

All these hotels are going to miss it when everyone is in Blytheville next year. They probably won't even get through traffic.

One thing I liked about the Clubhouse Inn (beyond those breakfasts) was that the manager would set up a grill and on Tuesday would take steak dinner orders. For $20 a plate, it was an awesome meal.

Now, we have a couple of secret places we go to for crazy good steak in Topeka. Kansas.... its all about the beef. One place we tried to keep a secret is The North Star. In business since the 30s, it has loads of character. Owned by The Blind Tiger, but the food is 100 times better. If you are interested in going, you will need directions to find it. No windows. Look for the star. Go in the front door. The locals will all get quiet when you walk in and you will feel like you are in a David Lynch movie. But the steaks... OH MY GOD. And the fries swimming in gravy. Dear Lord... no wonder I ended up in the cardiac ward.

Sadly... I will just be having the salad.

We've never stayed at a hotel for Nationals (yet another advantage of towing for us), but when I was moving to Colorado for grad school, our rental truck blew an engine, and the rental company paid to put us up overnight at the Clubhouse Inn while they towed us out a replacement truck from Kansas City. I'd echo every nice thing Randy and Steve said about it (although I didn't experience the steak grilling!)

The Hooters next to the Clubhouse was very unfriendly compared to the one local on near Anaheim. Maybe the gals were overworked, but they had no time for the customers while the local ones here are very friendly and go out of their way to make small talk, etc. ... and probably get much bigger tips!

That would be the Value Place Inn, built about 2-3 years ago.

First year back there, 1998, we stayed at the Days Inn, on Wanamaker, it was cheap and about what you would expect.
The next year we split a two bedroom suite at the Residence Inn, good size and a decent price.
Biggest problem with both of those places was have a bit of a drive to all of the events, go on surface streets or take the long way around and use the freeway to get to the Capitol Plaza. :(
Then we moved the the Capitol from that point on to save the driving, nice place, by far my top pick. The only bad thing about the Capitol is the very limited number of suites. This was an issue in 2005, we had Grandma come with us to watch Jessica, we could not get a suite and did not want to spring for two rooms at the Capitol. So we got a two bedroom unit at the Senate. Within an hour of checking in to the Senate I had made a reservation at the Capitol and we changed hotels the next day. The Senate rooms were so small you could not turn around, and our two bedroom had only one bath, which was in one of the bedrooms.
The Capitol is great if you bring the kids, nice pool, and if the kids get tired one parent can walk back to the room with them while the other stays at the banquet.
