Darwinism at it's best

I figure there have to be enough good stories out there to warrant a thread.

Here is a story I found today, although it is more of "attempted Darwinism"

Mountain Lion Attacks O.C. Man Who Pet Her Cubs
FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif. Authorities Wednesday were searching for a mountain lion and three cubs on Borrego Trail in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park.

A man was scratched by the mountain lion when he pet her baby cubs, an Orange County sheriff's spokesperson said.

The victim was being treated for superficial wounds at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills.

Richard Bales, who manages a gas station in the area, said the victim came to his business bleeding profusely from his right arm.

"He had three ... scratches along the arm, about four or five inches long," Bales said. "And he had blood all over his clothes, and it was getting all over the floor. He explained that he was in the park across the street and had seen a mountain lion, and he apparently reached to pet it and that it scratched him. We went ahead and rendered first aid. We tried to stop the bleeding and we went in and called 911 to let the sheriff and medical personnel know so that we could bring assistance to him."

Bales said the man is a regular customer and he walks with a cane and has some paralysis.

Park rangers, sheriff's deputies and Department of Fish and Game personnel, with the help of a helicopter, were searching the area.

The park has been closed, along with Foothill Elementary School, which is less than a mile from the area, sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said.

"If it happened the way the victim stated, he should consider himself very lucky to walk away with minor injuries," Amormino said. "If the mountain lion did scratch him, it was a provoked incident, and we're probably not going to do anything" to the mountain lion.

Park rangers, sheriff's deputies and Department of Fish and Game personnel, with the help of a helicopter, were searching the area. The park has been closed, along with Foothill Elementary School, which is less than a mile from the area, sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said.

Heard a radio news story about the incident this afternoon. (according to them) the man saw the cubs, the mother was asleep a few feet away. He thought he could pet the cubs without waking the mother. Apparently the mother wasn't asleep and was able to swipe at him without even getting up. After doing so, rather than attack him, she got up and lead the cubs away.

Latest is the thought the lion encounter was entirely imagined or made up. Bloody cut was real, but its cause???

If his story was true, he would be dead.

I heard it was Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson making out in the park.
He tried to pet Lindsay and Sam took a nasty swipe at the guy.

Just what a friend behind the Orange Curtain told me. He was at a wine tasting attended by Chief Bratton.

My favorite part was that the guy said because he was a Leo, he was a lion too and therefore identified with the cubs. Now it appears he was a lyin' alright.

Was out at Anaheim Stadium last night setting up a criterion course fo the USA Cylcing national championships. About a dozen mountain bike riders (one of which is a ranger who patrols the area) who ride Whiting weekly know of the guy who made the report and all said he has some mental problems and has done this before. There have been cases of small seemingly unattended mountain lion cubs seen out on the trails in the area but if the mother was alive and anywhere in site or smell of the guy, he would be catnip.

Ugh, what site has that dud?

OT: John, a criterion course off city streets? There won't be any objects to bump opponents into! [My main reason for avoiding crits, small guys get trampled.]

Somehow, I just knew it would be TV station. All they need is John Bunnell uttering his trademark car chase phrase, "a dangerous game of cat and mouse."

Any threat to a large cat's brood isn't going to get away with just a scratch. Momma's gonna make sure the threat is eliminated.

And here's another example of Darwinism and mountain lions, only the mountain lion missed the fool and got the dog.

Jacquie Anderson said they were awakened by a commotion in the room at around 4:30 a.m. and, when she got up to check what was happening, she realized the big cat was in the bedroom. She exclaimed that there was a mountain lion in the room and she believes that led it to run out the open doors with Scout in its mouth. The dog weighed 72 pounds.

Its in the Angel Stadium parking lot, east side under the Big A. We stacked hay bales in front of posts, fire hydrants, and other bicyclist unfriendly objects. Its a 2.5K course and we put up about 3 miles of fence. The crit is today.

Hay bales probably aren't all that friendly either.
