Porsche's weird accelerating sound

Post by Brian Ernst »

During this week's autocross it sounded like the majority of Porsche's under intense acceleration were shredding gravel. I've never heard a sound like that before. Did anyone else notice this? I looked up videos to see if I could hear this sound from other Porsche's, but no luck.

Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? Why did they sound like that?

I noticed that at our most recent event - on a Cayman.

Which model(s) were you hearing that sound? I'm wondering if it's a unique sound they developed for the "new" turbo cars. It's not quite as unique and pleasing as the air-cooled 911 engines, but it's definitely different.

You could be referring to the distinctive character of the Porsche flat-six exhaust note. It does sound gravelly and metalic-y compared to an ordinary V6 or I4. This video goes into why certain cars sound the way they sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXfw-sIQUws My favorite all time exhaust notes are still from the Schumacher era V10's :) and to a much lesser extent, equivalent road car Inline-5 cylinders.

I believe that is from the turbo flat four in the new 718 series. Does sound a bit odd.

It must be by default because 718 series does sounds like that compared to v6.
