Arg ... Which Power Adapter 4 Which HD ?

Post by Mako Koiwai »

Getting our office set up ... I've got five hard drives between Karen and I that I need to power up. I didn't take note of which AC/DC power adapter goes with which drive. The Drives don't say what their power requirements are. How do I tell which goes with which?

I'm having trouble finding the specific hard drives on line, and then some of them don't say what the power requirements are.

I DID note that some power adapter plugs fit some hard drives and some don't. If they fit ... can you use them, ie. is their a relationship between fit and power requirements?

No relationship between fit and power requirements, unfortunately. Found that out the hard way a few times by nuking a couple HDs, routers and switches by using the wrong power adapter. My only advice is "be careful." You might go to the manufacturers' Web sites and see if they list the specs for their drives there. Usually the adapter says exactly what it is.

The adapters do, but not the HD's ... and the manufacturer's don't always say what's required beyond 110/220 50/60 ... :(

Everything is labeled EXCEPT those drives and mini transformers!

It's possible that I have a manual somewhere ... but after the move, who knows where!

Maxtor OneTouch 4Plus http://www.maxtor.com/en/hard-drive-bac ... -plus.html

Mercury OWC (not the new Elite Pro) Firewire 800 OWCME8fW7200GBJ

Looks very similar to this photo ... which I can't read the Input. MY input only says 12 V.

Image

Western Digital My Book Home Edition 1T website says that these HD's use a 18 watt AC adapter ... which I DON'T have? The adapter that I have that LOOKS the closest is 12 v. 2.0 amps. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=357 see adapter picture under Accessories.

Karen's Maxtor OneTouch II ... she needed this up and running for work a while ago ... we took an educated guess ... and it's been working fine. (Whew!)

My Firelite can be powered off of a USB cable.

I've got a (output) 9 V, 1000ma adapter and two 12 V, 2.0 amp. adapters.

HOW DOES ONE FIND WATTS from AMPS? Is a 12V. 2.0 amp adapter = to 18 watts?

V * A = W

12v * 2.9a = 34.8 w
