Cal Club SuperSchool for race licensing is in March at BRP

Post by Oli Thordarson »

For those of you thinking about road racing....

This coming March at Buttonwillow is the SCCA SuperSchool. The Thursday evening orientation and Friday/Saturday driving class is the path to get your SCCA racing license.

You will get a ton of track time; about seven hours over two days of driving. On Sunday you can even race your first race. The class is relatively inexpensive at around $500.

Hey Oli:

Not sure these guys over here can handle more that 2 or 3 minutes of driving with out having to go chase some cones  But who knows....

I can fix that. I will put a bunch of cones in the paddock. The road racing guys won't be able to get around them without hitting them. The AX guys can get their fix during the day putting them all back upright. It will be a full-time job for them. I hope they will be able to find time to get out on the track! The other guys in road racing hit more cones than I do!!!

I think the problem probably lies in equipment. Don't you need a fire suit, SA rated helmet, window nets, 5 point harness current SFI on all?

Yes. You need that stuff for the lincensing school. There are other days just for time trials, lapping or performance driving clinics where that stuff is not needed.

I really wish my Prelude (already gutted and ready for a cage, but need to replace the motor, tranny, and steering rack) is ready for road racing, then I can sign up for this school. Now with my twin girls, I don't know when I will have time to get back on that project.

You need a GCR legal road race car... But there are always very reasonably priced rental race cars available for the school. This is the least expensive way to go racing, a pro school will be $2k+.

This is absolutely the way to go. Be sure to get the extra insurance.

I would not worry about the insurance for a school... If you have an issue you wont be getting your license anyway. :unimpressed:

If you need a race/school ready car, you can rent one of the Spec Miatas from 7 Only at Buttonwillow. If you want to run something faster they also have the GT2 race cars. Talk to Tom or Bette Dragoun over there, (661) 764-5456 or tdragoun at sevensonly.com/bdragoun at sevensonly.com
They will crew for you that weekend and everything....

Don't be jealous that our car control skills are far superior to road racers

Well I can tell you first hand when I get around those cones confusion reigns supreme and what few car handling skills I alledgedly have all flying just like the cones. I really think it comes down to road racers not really being a very bright bunch of drivers and we just get overwhelmed.

Consider this invitation of a "get-together" some SoCal Corvette road racers have thrown together in rather impromptu fashion.
------------------------------------------------------------------

Tomorrow, Saturday, January 8th at 3 PM the local T1 racing community is having a "get-together" in Cypress. The venue is hosted by the fastest father and son duo in all of T1, Bob and Kyle Kelley.

Their private race shop is located off of Valley View between I-5 and the I-405/22 Junction. The address is:
8851 Watson
Cypress, CA 92626

If you have a problem finding the shop, call John (949 six-seven-eight-7525) or Bob (562 eight-nine-six-7137)

Although this is their private race shop of two garages of about 3000+ and 2000+ square feet each, plus a huge storage yard, many of the T1 racers have their Corvettes stored there and use the shop to work on the cars.

Right now the expected guest list is:
  1. Brad S
  2. Roy B
  3. Carl F
  4. Brent H
  5. Steve S
  6. Oli T and son, Kristjan
  7. Bob K
  8. Kyle K
  9. Ryan C
  10. John S
  11. And our Special Guests of the occasion Aaron and Angie Q of Ohio!

I also invited three prospective T1 racers looking to buy or build T1 cars for the 2011 season. Those drivers are:
  • Jim T -maybe
  • Scott L - confirmed
  • Chuck M -confirmed
  • Ken D - maybe

The agenda is to show up at 3:00ish and hang out for an hour or two looking at cars, talking about stuff on the cars, snacking on munchies, planning for up-coming races, yucking it up, telling some lies, etc. Around 5:00 we can go grab a bite to eat if we are hungry. After that, the most persevering competitors who have the time can go jump in our K1 electric Corvettes at K1 Speed in Irvine for some grudge match races.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Post-up if you plan to attend.

Oli

Sounds like fun. I'll have to miss - wrenching on the car and then the CASOC Christmas party in the evening.
