DIY Powder coating

Post by Bob Pl »

I was thinking of trying this for various small metal parts, maybe wheels, home projects.

If you have done it please comment.

Thanks.

@ Bill ... Actually it is: http://adrianshort.co.uk/2011/09/25/its ... e-know-it/

I would assume that Bob looked at various DIY's and wanted commented on a particular method rather then have us research the various DIY powder coating treatments available :?

No link! The nerve.

I am just asking if anyone has tried to do powder coating, in their home shop/garage. Basic question as I have not done anything.

Was it easy, was it a disaster? Were you pleased with the results, what equipment did you use?

How's that?

If you have not done it then you will have little or nothing to post.

I am not asking anyone to do any research, I can google. I can post links.

I think you'd have problem curing the powder coat. I believe it takes an oven cure in the 350-400 degree range. A couple of years ago I looked into having some wheels powder coated and several places that do that sort of thing recommended against doing aluminum wheels used in competition do to the curing temps. Apparently the alloys commonly used for wheels might get brittle when curing powder coat. My 02 cents.

Thanks Steve,

The oven thing may be an issue.

You mean buying used powder coated OE wheels and running Hoosier's on them.

Don't do that.

They cracked under stress adter the extra powder coating treatment.

I've done zinc plating and trivalent chromate with a Caswell kit but no powder coating. You need a faraday cage and an oven to powdercoat. Just take em to rw little or some local shop, it's not that much.

Yup. Once of the aging processes for aluminum involves heating the metal to 400F and holding it there for a set time. Powder coating can take the original material to a T0 condition. Also, multi-piece wheels should never have their bolting surfaces powder coated.
