Post by Mako Koiwai »

... our SCCA owned Buttonwillow race track. We members don't have to pay an entry fee to the track facility.

http://www.calclub.com/time-trials.php

First Timer Andi Cole will be there with her "new" Z-06 in Time Trials, Karen's running my STL Miata in Run Group 6 ... wheel to wheel racing.

If you can't make Saturday and the intro to Time Trials, you will get private attention during your first run session on Sunday.

We're all staying at the Motel 6 just down the road ... $45.95 with the SCCA discount.

BBQ dinner at the track Saturday after our runs ... by the BBQ restaurant from Buttonwillow truck stop where we stay and usually eat.

Motel 6 ... 661 - 764 - 5121

2nd choice motel Super 8 661 - 764 - 5117

Get your goat

Meaning

Make you annoyed or angry.
Origin

The dictionary definition of goat is 'a ruminant quadruped of the genus Capra'. What's that got to do with being angry? Given the meaning of 'get your goat', we might expect to find goat as a slang term meaning anger or annoyance. That meaning is recorded in the US book Life in Sing Sing, 1904, which goat is given as a slang term for anger.

The phrase originated in the US and the first entry in print that I can find comes from a fanciful story about a burst water pipe that was printed in the US newspaper The Stevens Point Daily Journal, May 1909:

"Wouldn't that get your goat? We'd been transferring the same water all night from the tub to the bowl and back again."

The expression took a few years to cross the Atlantic. The first non-US citation isn't found until 1924 in the English author John Galsworthy's story White Monkey, and even there it is clearly seen as a recent innovation:

"That had got the chairman's goat! - Got his goat? What expressions they used nowadays!"

The following year, The Times printed a piece in memory of the then recently deceased Friedrich Baedeker. This included a side-swipe at American tourists and uses the phrase as a typical piece of Americana:

"... goggled Americans whispering aloud, 'Wa-al Sadie, these durned three star things get my goat'!"

A commonly repeated story which purports to explain the phrase's origin is that goats were placed with racehorses to keep them calm. When ne'er-do-wells who wanted the horse to race badly removed it, i.e. they 'got someone's goat', the horse became unsettled and ran badly. That's just the sort of tale that gets the folk etymology juices running. Let's just say that there's no evidence to support that story.

Now, why exactly would I drive 3 hours to stay in a Motel 6 in Bakersfield? Oh yea, so I could attend a "Women In Miatas Partially Speeding" (W.I.M.P.s) conference. :D

I've thought about it, but my helmeted cabeza doesn't fit in my MX-5 with the hardtop up, and I don't have a roll bar.

(You're driving too slow ... and don't you still have a motorhome? Hook ups at the track)

Lots of decent, cheap through Priceline hotels in Bakersfield ... which is where Karen prefers to stay. But the cheap places where most of the Club Racers stay is just down the road from the track at a big "truck stop" on the 5. After a full day at the track, plus the BBQ social afterwards, a close by clean bed is all one needs or typically wants. ;)

@David ... Excuse number 7 is valid. Yah, need to have at least a hard top, if you don't have a roll bar. Sounds like you need a lower racing seat.

These events ARE the first step to eventually joining Isley, Philip Royle/Sports Car Magazine and Toby at the SCCA Run-Off National Championships ...

About 3 hours from Apple Valley. The motorhome alternator is on the fritz AND cost of gas is out of the question.

And NOW you mention a hardtop or roll-bar. At Fontana when we talked you and Karen said "Any legal Solo car" is eligible. You promised, you promised!!

Actually, I already knew that. I was just fun'n wit cha. But it is another reason I'll be 'wimp'n" out. It would have been fun. You folks have a great time and I'm sure we'll see you the following weekend at Fontana.

Just to be clear, I'm the King of the Wimps! Note that Karen is the one that got her SCCA racing license and is racing my ex-Philip Royle SCCA Miata race car, not me. Although it's thrilling to race wheel to wheel, I found that personally I had trouble concentrating for even 20 minute run groups during track days. I would find myself thinking, "man, I've got to do another lap." I would try to concentrate on doing each next element well, but had trouble as my scatter braininess would interfere. I would just as soon sell the car but Karen loves it. In exchange I want her to front the downpayment for a RTR car. Oh we'll, off to finish corner balancing it. Yours truly, Karen's Pit Bitch

Hmmm...sounds like she could use a co-driver...maybe for an enduro. Did I mention that I drive a Miata? That I'm in 1st Place in ES in Cal-Club and near 2nd in San Diego having won last Sunday. That I'm a former FF pilot and Jim Russell School graduate? I need to get out on a road course. 8-) :D :gpower:
Enough self-promotion. Hope you folks have a ball...at the Motel 6 and "truck stop". ;)

Looks like we have 14 entries ... not too bad.

If you want to go for a drive ... come on out and check out Buttonwillow.

One can often get a ride in the Pace Car

Andi did her first Time Trials with her '04 Z06 ... and loved it. She and Steve were asking a lot of questions of other races about budgets for their class of cars ... ;)
