We got about 2' over the last two days, my dogs look like submarines when they go outside.

Here's the view out my familyroom this morning.

Suddenly the 3" we got here on Tuesday in Topeka don't seem that bad.

Of course, it hasn't been much above freezing since Sunday. I was working (and sleeping) through most of the nice days last weekend. After work, on Sunday morning, I went into Lowes at 8:30am and it was 55F. When I came out at 9:00am, it was 41F, the wind had done a near 180 and was now gusting at 30mph from the NW, and by the time I got home at 9:15am, it was 34F. It continued to fall throughout the rest of the day and was probably 10F at sundown. KC was even worse, dropping from 65F to 30F in under an hour.

Of course, we have more on the way, and you probably don't (Toby excluded).

I did learn that BFG's new Supersport A/S sucks in snow. We're able to get wheelspin going slightly downhill at 15mph in 3rd (just off idle). Starting off the end of our street (which doesn't get plowed) is "interesting." And braking is even worse. Fortunately, the Jeep is all but unstoppable in the snow, and we work at different times.

All-seasons? I call them no-seasons - useless in all conditions and particularly bad up here right now: We're in a deep freeze I have seldom (never) seen in Calgary for this length of time, so early in the season and the roads are basically skating rinks all over the city and people are driving 20 mph (or less) and still sliding around on those "no-seasons" useless pieces of cr*p. The rubber compound simply doesn't handle the cold temps and the tires are just too hard to offer up any significant traction. In the province of Quebec they recently made it law that vehicles have to have winter tires for the winter (not all-seasons) - good law.

Modern all-seasons are getting closer, and are probably superior to pre-Blizzak winter tires. You should see the BFG video. You have to select "street" and then "Super Sport A/S test." But in my experience, these tires work no where near as well as what they show on the video.

And for those of us who only get about 10 snow days a year (that's 10 days with snow on the ground), winter tires aren't a worthwhile purchase. At least when you don't live in the country, drive a RWD car like a Miata or S2K, or make a living moving said snow. They are also very good about keeping the major roads clear here in Topeka, and the main problems are side streets.

Think there's some variety in the A-S's - the Goodyear "perf" RSA's that came on my Dakota R/T were useless in the snow and cold and, in fact, the summer tires on my old Miata were actually better. So perhaps the hi-perf AS's are not so good in the cold (rubber compound - the RSA's were like summer tires - substantially less grip on pavement below about 50 deg. F). However for an AS the RSA's were remarkably good in the dry on a warmer day. I ended up buying snows for the truck and then it was fine in the snow.

I hope everyone saw that video of the dog charging around the snow-filled yard. I think Tom Tanquary or Mako forwarded it. Simply hilarious.

There was almost no sight of the dog mid-run, just submarine lines unless he jumped up to see where he was.

Nope, I didn't post the link because I don't have it any more. Maybe a search on Dog Running Snow would work?

All right, settle down. I got it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sUL0KCIc48" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The really good stuff starts at 1:24.

That, in a nutshell, is why I love dogs. They're such enthusiastic lunatics.

I'm really tired of snow now. I'm in Portland area for the holidays. I measured the snow at my parents house, 30" deep. It's still falling. We were supposed to get rain today. Nope, just more snow.

You haven't seen recent World Cup Slalom racing ... yes, SHORT ski's ... pretty remarkable that they are so good now that World Cup ski racers can handle ice slopes with that short a ski.

I have, but not recently.

Ash's just look short for an adult, but if they're easier to turn, then why not?

Often back-country skis are shorter to save weight and aid maneuverability. Anybody want to buy a set of Head 360s with Ramer bindings, mohair climbing skins and Ramer self-arrest grip poles?
