In 2007, I think I was driving someone late at night at HPT when I just caught one of those speeding barrels in my peripheral vision. I must have been doing 20-30mph, Fortunately, it didn't hit Julie's new car, but it did bounce off the Uhaul's RR tire (and again, fortunately not the bodywork of the truck), and left a pretty good scuff mark on the tire. It bounced off and then starting rolling again.
At the last KC event (at Truman Sports Complex, where the Chiefs and Royals lose), we were there right after a football game and the parking lot was ringed with about 15 porta-potties. By the end of the (cold) afternoon, the only one not blown down was the one that we had rented, which was leaning up against a light pole. Fortunately (and probably why they all blew over), they were all dry and not full.

Flyers are updated. Ladies and Gents - and Bill - the conditions today are supposed to be better than tomorrow, making it simply impossible for the Practice.
The winds are supposed to die down to peak gusts of 55mph for Sunday. Sorry, that's just not a realistic option. Toby's thinking of going to the Arizona event. It's on their concrete site. Supposed to be about the same size pad as we have at Cal Speedway.
We managed to avoid all significant catastrophe, but the motorhome did take a hit late in the game when one of the Dancin' Trash Drums decided to mosey on over our way. Fortunately Kurt was able to stop it about 5 feet from KJ's car...
We will strive for another event in the year, but we already have a couple planned that may not be on the calendar. We do have a November event at AAA Speedway, I believe on the second weekend of the month.
And if the Divisional doesn't happen, that'll still be a local event (if not an L.A. / S.D. challenge of some sort.)
I so wanted to drive this weekend.
Mike

Sure wish I would have read this before driving out.
Not windy at home so it never occurred to me that we might have a proble.
A semi was flipped on it's side right before cherry exit, so cancellation was probably a good idea.
See y'all next time.

Well, ARRRG.
Never saw the post. Got up at 6:00 and drove to Cal speedway. When I got there at about 7:30, the conditions were "not too bad", but there was certainly the potential for cone-moving gusts. The speedway had the gate closed and was turning everyone away (with the odd exception of one rig with a bunch of carts...) I saw a few SCCA folks on the road, but not many, so the word must have mostly gotten out. There were tons of bummed folks that were apparently headed for the drag strip. The gate guys implied that the speedway was closed tomorrow too, but didn't seem to have any actual SCCA specific info.
Even though I didn't personally get the word, I think calling things off last night and getting the word out was a good call. Much better outcome than having the speedway shut us down on the fly at 6:00 am. I am curious if the "event principals" had any communication with the speedway folks and if so, how that went. Are the new Auto Club gang, going to be closing down events for wind, even if we think we are ok? It would probably be good to make sure those lines of communication are working. I don't recall the Speedway calling an event shutdown under the "Cal Speedway" regime.
Guess I'll spend today putting the new springs on the car...

There wasn't a change of ownership at the speedway, just a sponsorship deal.
KJ was talking to the speedway yesterday, it was our call.

Did everyone who pre-register "automatically" get an email notification ... like I did?
Another reason to use the system and pre-register ?

KJ will post another photo for us of the carnage. The gate guard didn't want to let anyone in, which only angered one of the guys standing alongside the gate more when they let me and my brother in to pick up the cones we left out last night.
They *did* tell me the small classroom the kart people have (it's like a mini-mobile home) blew over during the night.
Some of our stuff blew over too, but the motorhome is okay.
As for the winds, when I first got there around 9:40 it didn't seem too bad, but within an hour KJ, his wife Stacey and I were sorting cones (pulling out the really ugly ones) and the wind picked up so much that I couldn't hear either one of them if they were more than a couple feet away from me. There's no way a course would've remained in place.
Wait 'til you see the photo from KJ! You'll all be glad we called it off last night...
Mike
PS Yes Mako, everyone who pre-registered through AXWare received an e-mail message. We sent that from KJ's laptop just before posting this thread. It's a *very* nice feature!

Cancelled event (Sunday)

AAAARRRGGGGGGGGGGGG.
Suppose I should have known enough to check for a cancellation, but since the forecast was for improvement I did not bother.
Running in the afternoon so I got there about 9:45, cannot speak for what the conditions were at 6 or 7 am, but it was fine at 9:45. Some gusting @ maybe 20 - 30 mph but dying out. Mostly sunny. Would have been a nice event.
As was posted in the original cancel thread, I am not sure what the reasoning is for cancelling both days of an event when one day is bad & the following day is nice. Maybe some logistics thing that I am out of the loop on.
Anyway, I have no problem with the cancellation, sure wish we had a phone tree or similar to notify the registered people.
I talked to a guy in a MINI & he was calling his co driver to save the trip, so I figure there were a few (or a bunch) of us who made the trip for nothing.
No response expected or nesessary.
Rant off.
See ya next time.
BTW posting time is off on the forum, I posted @ 11:53 says 12:53

An email was sent from the ORM software to the email on record of all people who had registered. If you didn't get it, you might want to check the email address listed on your account. If you do and there was an email problem, let me know so we can report it. Most people seemed to have gotten the message, so I'm hoping it is user error and not a programming issue.
