No, they didn't discover it that way at all. Use of CO2 in racing tires far pre-dates Stepneygate, all the way back to the early 1990s. I highly recommend that people who seek accurate and relevant information on F1, instead of the second-hand regurgitation found at F1-live.com, read what's posted at grandprix.com, whose writer/editors have several decades of experience reporting on the sport.
Or better yet, subscribe to F1 Racing magazine.

Or better yet, Racecar Engineering ;)
They were using a mix of CO2 and a refrigerant gas.

Hmm. A refrigerant gas? So take a gas that absorbs and holds heat like CO2 and cut it with a refrigerant to get the right amount of fluctuation.
Gio, grandprix.com is a lot more timely than F1. Much as I like the magazine, what we get is two months old at least.

It's not about the timeliness (mags come every month, and internet is in seconds). I was more referring to the quality of the writers in the magazine. One is pit-lane reporter (and former F1 Team Manager) Peter Windsor. Even nazi-wannabe Moseley contributes every now and then.

True, the quality of the writing very good. Windsor knows his stuff forwards and backwards. The two writers at grandprix.com are veteran F1 journalists. There's more business of motorsports stuff there than most people would read, but their analysis of Stepneygate was very good.
P.S. buy lots of Haymarket mags so poor Jason can keep his wife and daughter in Jimmy Choos.

Too cheap to buy a Chase Cam. Bill uses butt suction to mount himself to the car.

That's what i was making reference to..
and just so Bob doesn't come in and cut my head off too, it was the use of refrigerant as part of the mix that was the interesting part.

I'm unarmed! Yes, it was an interesting twist. Not sure of the purpose, but some chemical engineer probably can guess.

I did notice that. Did Haymarket recently buy F1 Racing or was it Haymarket buying SportsCar? Or were they both part of Haymarket all along?
The U.S. distributor website is:

Both have been Haymarket for like 20+ years.
