Need Help, "Arguments" To Get Son 2 Drive AX

Max's mom didn't get the Maxima's registration done in time for this weekend ... ... but Max has a reunion anyway on Sunday ... so now it's suppose to be the No$ Practice ... Karen and my entries split by the three of us ... please Yuki ?

My son, The Artist, finally got his drivers license last year, at 19, just before leaving for his Sophomore year in college (Sarah Lawrence). He didn't drive much before leaving, didn't drive during the school year and is now back for the summer, with is Grandma's approx. '99 Maxima at his disposal.

I would like him to come out to our next event to test himself and the car at at least a moderate pace and perhaps push himself to see how he and the car will do in what could amount to an emergency situation, ie. skidding, sliding.

He doesn't really want to ... his mom doesn't think it's necessary. Can you help come up with some reasoning to persuade him. Hmmm ... perhaps Chucks daughter Heather should talk to him. She did her first tentative laps at the last event.

He did enjoy his run with Motonishi six years ago!

Yeah, if he''s not in it for the fun of it, use the emergency situation experience as an argument. After 32 years of aggressive street driving I thought I was pretty good. Then I went to my first autocross in January. I learned more about emergency car control in that day than I did in 30 years of driving. And that was with no instruction! Probably could have avoided many of the accidents I've been in over the years.

there's a novice school coming up in June in the SD region...

have you offered to pay for his entry?

or asked if he'd like to come out to a practice day for ride-alongs (it's been 6 years, he might like it more riding along now that he can drive)?

or take him go-karting @ dromo or k1 even?

... or let him drive the corvette? LOL, j/k j/k ;)

if after all that and he still doesn't want to do an autox, i'd give up.

If It's anything SCCA-related that's ok. But FYI, if you're unsure, e-mail the E-Board like Lisa Severy did prior to her posting about the auto-x in Camarillo. We're not gestapos here. It's all volunteer. And FYI...the flyer is already on our calendar since the beginning of the year.

I would try to get him to try it once. Just because he doesn't show any interest in cars doesn't mean that he won't enjoy it. I tried it for the first time and didn't expect to like it that much. On the first lap though I was hooked and had a huge smile on my face. I just wished I had known about it earlier. A practice might be more fun for him since you get more runs and there isn't any pressure that comes with competing.

If he won't go I would try to get him into one of the new driver schools that are mentioned above. It is important to have the skills in an emergency situation.
