there will be 3 lanes marked on the road - but there will be 4 lanes of cars, plus 4 lanes of mopeds packed between the cars... mopeds with 3 people on them, plus maybe their dog.

i still don't know how the hell you teach a dog to sit on a moped.
I was going to mention something about Taiwan. After living there for a month Jeff is not exaggerating. If there was room for all that, even if just by inches that's how it went. I wish I could drive as well as the average Taiwanese. You have to see it to believe it. And most of the dogs are bigger too. Lab and Chow looking things. Oh, and the toddler standing on the moped looking over the handle bars

What I was going to say about Taiwan was there are no stop signs. None. At least I never saw one. I also never saw an accident while I was there. They somehow made it work.

that's the really weird thing. no real traffic control, but no accidents either. and the congestion is largely due to sheer volume, you don't have people rubbernecking (well, that comes with no accidents).

i'm sure part of that is that people just don't get all huffy if someone bumps into your car going 2mph, pulling over to exchange info, etc..

I can't speak to how it is currently, but Saigon in the late 60's the larger vehicle had the right of way, e.g., jeeps had right of way over mopeds, 1/2 tons right of way over jeeps, duece and an half right over 1/2 tons, and so on. Traffic circles and angled streets - mayhem.

The Old Joke ...

Visiting ________, I'm being driven around by _________, who flies through every Red light.Coming up to a Green light he slams on his brakes! I ask what's going on? He says, "Got to stop! My brother might be approaching the intersection!"

Driving around a lot of foreign metropolis's can be tough because of the traffic density but Istanbul was particularly scary because not only was there a LOT of traffic but everyone thinks they're a race car driver! I'm surprised there isn't a top Turkish F1 driver. Maybe he hasn't survived long enough to get there ....
