After a few thousand miles oil starts to look darker. Based on what I have read, this by itself does not mean that its lubrication properties have degraded.Vincent Wong wrote:I also don't trust the 15k (for the BMW) and the 10k (for the Audi) oil change intervals. I have been changing the oil every 5k miles. Even with only 5k miles, the oil looked dirty.
That's why I send mine to Blackstone. Proof positive.Mihail Milkov wrote:After a few thousand miles oil starts to look darker. Here's the summary:KJ Christopher wrote:Please report back.Kurt Ra wrote: Oil looked dirty and I can't imagine doubling that interval. Sent a sample to Blackstone to see how it looks.
Full report is an attachment.Blackstone wrote:KURT: This oil run lasted about 1,000 miles longer than the last, and as we'd expect iron increased with the
additional miles. A increase of 5 ppm isn't anything to worry about, and with all other metals reading around
averages and matching well with your first sample, we think this 1.6L is doing fine. Silicon improved to a
modest 5 ppm reading, showing that the air filter is working well. No fuel or coolant was present and the
viscosity read normally for 0W/40 this time. At 21,400 miles, we like the looks of this Mini. Try going 8,800
miles next time.
Thanks! Nice having actual data.Kurt Ra wrote:Here's the summary:
