How they calculate the treadware number is very subjective, so you can't really look at the number itself as a direct indicator of performance. I promise, the Dunlop is a good tire. I went through two sets of them before recently switching to the Hankooks (which are cheaper in my size). It seems lately more people are saying the Hankook is a better than the Dunlop, but they're not really that much different.

If you're going to be running with an HS, then Ron is right, there is no 140 treadware rule for the class, and you can run a tire like the Hankook Z214, which is basically a slick tire (also the Kumho V710 and Hoosier A6). However, I wouldn't recommend driving on the street with those tires, as they have no tread, which means you have to have a second set of wheels, and bring them to every event and change them out. They're probably worth another 2-3 seconds or so.

Right. I think that might be too much of an investment since I plan to sell the car at the end of the year. Unless I'm overestimating the cost of wheels and R-comps.

Also, I'm running HS NOV right now, and I think most of the other novices are also on street tires.

If your goal is to compete on a level playing field than run what everybody else is running.
If your goal is to win the novice class than run a more competitive tire than everybody else. :ibrightdea:

You can always sell the wheels/tires when you are done with them.

Ummm... but you driving a Martrix!!! That's a disadvantage to start with. Bryan is in a S2000.

I'm tossing a few ideas around in my head: Evo, RX8, S2000... But I'm not sure yet. I gotta really ask around and do my research.

Are you gonna run BS or SK1 next year?

Haha competition makes us better right? I can already sense a friendly rivalry getting started between me and Byron.

Matt,
I intend to run SK1 next season. It just seems like the right thing to do.

Once I get my car figured out, I may start running B Stock to keep it interesting.

Get the S2000, you'll love it!

Run SK2-HS...
Buy the Hankook RS3s.. they are $105 each shipped for the 16" size.

There is another, less expensive, CSCC sponsored AX school in July. See Upcoming Events

The Dunlop Star Spec Z1's are terrific ... very forgiving at the limit, confidence inspiring ... but the Hankook RS3's are a tiny bit sticker, but softer side walled, for less money.
