Check out this interesting bit on astro photography with digital cameras:
http://valerie.desnoux.free.fr/neat/nikonD70.htm
But the newer Canon's and Nikon's have become
amazingly noise free at higher iso's ... and the Canon RAW is truly RAW, as opposed to the issues that fellow was having with the Nikon D70's RAW.
A friends straight forward night sky shot ... with a bit of flashlight waving at the rocks. A few years ago you wouldn't have been able to do that shot, and certainly not with film. The noise/grain would overcome the stars. If you enlarge the high rez file you can clearly see the difference in colors between the stars.

Not Looking Ahead!
It's fun seeing a number of people looking at those cones that they are about to hit! You go where you're looking ... unless you're going too fast to where you want to be.

i really need to calibrate my monitors at home though, they seem to be way too bright. the processed pictures i posted all seem to be on the dark side when i see it on my work monitor.

Maybe that's M. Shins "problem?" + my monitor is bright, and both yours and his pixs look quite down.

don't worry, you weren't the only one who had a distinct distaste for those set of cones..

My monitors seem just fine to me, they are turned up on the brighter side. And also I did the post processing according to how I wanted the image to look, not following the conventional photo journalistic style. BTW Jeff, by my monitors your images aren't dark at all. They may be slightly flat, but other than that they're fine.
Here a are a few more from this weekend. I adjusted a few to be a bit brighter since it was such an issue.

Very cool collage! If that was my car, I'd want a Poster of it!
Both your and Jeff's shots look quite (unnaturally) dark on my usually bright MacBookPro screeen.
Does my shot below look extra light on your monitor? Considering it's a bight sunny scene. Compared to when I processed it, it's looking just a bit flat right now.

Check this out, Jeff shoots the two subjects he likes best at once. He kills tow birds with one stone! Or I almost kill one bird with a civic?
There is a clever pun in there somewhere....
