In the past there has been an internal commitment at Toyota that by about next model year, EVERY model line would have a hybrid option. Its been a lot of years since I had that conversation with a Toyota exec, but this car seems to change directions for the company.

Or maybe not. Keep the 2.0L gas motor and ADD an electric motor and you have the makings of a legit hot rod.

Seems to be trickle down from Akio Toyoda taking over the company, He's a motorsport fan.

Don't forget the FR Korean Kar which is aiming at this market.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe (4 cyl)
Wheelbase (in.) 111.00
Length (in.) 182.30
Width (in.) 73.40
Height (in.) 54.50
Ground Clearance (in.) 5.10
Curb Weight - Manual (lb.) 3294
Engine 2.0L 210 hp I4
Hopefully the Toybaru won't come in as heavy as the Genesis did.
At Nationals this year, a Genesis Coupe did well, 1 place out of the trophies. 7th out of 18. The 6 cars ahead of it were Mini's.

I think the Tobaru is aiming below 3000lbs. Maybe not S2000 light, but somewhere in between.
The flat four keeps the weight down and further back. Plus the additional torque.
I wonder how the fuel economy compares to a 2.0L vvti engine.

That dashboard/steering wheel mockup is dreadful ... totally Hasbro!

Some people complain about plain looking BMW and Subaru interiors ... that's JUST the way I Like It ... simple, austere, functional.

And with those short overhangs, I bet it's all in the wheelbase.

BTW, given the number of his posts on this subject, I'd say someone is obsessed. Tom, you planning to upgrade when this baby comes out?

It's a Subaru chassis, and for power Toyota's chosen a 2.0-liter flat four-cylinder from Subaru, too. The naturally aspirated version of Subaru's turbo four puts its estimated 200 hp to the rear wheels, via a six-speed manual transmission.
...
Rumor suggests the FT-86 will go on sale as a 2011 model in Japan, with U.S. plans uncertain. A base price of $25,000 has been suggested,
What class would this be in and what other choices are there for a car like this in this size (coupe, front engine, rear drive)?

Very similar numbers to an S2000, just depends on how heavy it comes in at.

First guess would be A Stock for the current rules.

hmmm, S2000 is 237 bhp and about 2,810 lb... 2,855 lb (with hardtop + audio + AC)

So the RX-8 is longer and taller, so one would think the FT86 could be lighter...

Given that the engine I've heard thrown around is a 2.0 liter, normally-aspirated boxer 4, I'd say probably more like G stock. If they put a turbocharger on it and get somewhere north of 200 hp out of it, then I could see BS or AS maybe. But until the car is officially introduced and independently tested, it's all speculation.

Now if they'd just put a real front suspension on it, and a real limited slip... Then maybe room for 285's all around on 18x9.5 factory wheels. Let it come in with 50-50% weight distribution, four channel ABS that doesn't go into ice mode easily, and maybe a 65mph 2nd gear. Wrap it up in a small stiff package that weighs 2650lbs and then maybe I won't care that it has only 200hp.
