wow. there's a wild bald eagle fledgling that's taken residence (at least temporarily) at El Dorado park in Long Beach:



she doesn't have any tags, and no one knows where she came from, but if you want to see her, i guess her routine is 7am-11am fishing at Pond 3

just look for the swarm of photographers lugging $10,000 camera equipment on their shoulders.

Pfft! Lightweights! My best lens is 2000mm at f/10 or 1280 at f/6.3 with a reducer. I think with a 200mm aperture and using all mirrors, I can beat almost anything as far as contrast and resolution. Oh, and the "lens" says "Celestron" on the side ;)

Seriously, nothing's gonna touch that for photographing a stationary subject. And you don't have to worry about things being too close, it focuses down to about 25 ft (where it's effectively a macro lens!).

haha.. telescopes are cheating.

my 100-400 with a 1.4x + 2.0x converters on a 1.6 crop body ends up being 1792mm @ f/11. I'd have to make sure it's on a ROCK SOLID tripod, and remote shutter release though. I think i'm going to take a late morning next wed to try my luck with the big bird.

interestingly enough (maybe not), the main guys that caused so many problems at KPMG (where I used to work) came from Deloitte (where I now work). Ahh, the good old days, when letter of the law was all that mattered in tax planning. No more convincing a foreign government to sell you their power plant with a put option in 15 years and an annual lease and booking a buttload of expenses.

More than likely that's a golden eagle, somewhat common around here although mostly seen in the mountains and foothills. Goldens (the official bird and symbol of Mexico) is found here and throughout Mexico, the bald eagle is found mostly north of here with 50% of them in Alaska, most of the rest in the Pacific NW. There's a family of golden eagles that live right by the 5 near Crows Landing south of Davis that I often see when driving up there.

I saw an enormous Golden Eagle on the backside of Catalina once.

Still nothing like the day I saw a Condor near Piru. Big ugly buzzard with the wing span of a cessna.

well, I'm not exactly a big time bird person, but there's like 100 people between some serious birders, and the auduban society, all think it's a bald eagle.

hopefully i'll get a chance to go out there this upcoming weekend, and see her out there..

Me neither, it just would be so unusual to see one here. It's parents can't be that far off. So where are they I wonder? Balds are wetland birds so there aren't that many places it could have come from.

It makes it bald, not necessarily an eagle.

My ass isn't killin' me anymore and maybe someone will take up a collection for me to get a bucket of eagle wings for my birthday like the guys over on rrax are doing to get me some buffalo wings...
