Doug, I wouldn't take any chances and try to scrub them in. Seb and I have been running the same tires and I've always complained about them needing to be broken in.

+1. I don't know how it is with the Hankooks, but when we ran a brand new set of Bridgestones for the first time on Sat. at the SD tour, they were atrocious. Sat. evening, Tom scrubbed them in a bit (just enough to get the greasy crop off) and they were as good on Sun. as they were bad on Sat.

But scrubbing them in can be accomplished just driving them to the event typically

I think our case involved a little more "involved" scrubbing. Something about a deserted parking lot and some donuts.

Yes, Kurt, my regimen involved some midnight runs around the industrial complex north of my house...the roads there have lots of tight right handers that are autocross-y. Even then, after a week of street driving the Direzzas felt slimy on the first couple of runs. I think a full practice is the way to go, to get them used to the surface you're going to compete on.

On a side note, thank heavens for free WiFi at John Wayne...my flight to SF is delayed two hours, so it's nice to sit here and jawbone on the forums!

Jeff and I have a difference of opinion on this one, and since he is more thorough than I, he is probably right.

I will admit that the first run might not be as sticky, but on every street tire I've run, one test and tune run or the drive to was enough to get rid of the tread release compound. Some street tires might be better after a heat cycle, some only degrade in performance (maybe slowly) after the first heat cycle.

At any rate if the choice was run on old tires, or tires of an inferior compound, or run on new stickers, I'll take the stickers every time.

In my experience, sticker fresh Toyos and Hankooks are great first runs out. Not necessarily the best (they get better) but good enough to post competitive times come race day. Bridgestone RE-11s and Dunlop Z1 Star Specs i really needed to get good scrub ins for the tire to come alive. Before an event with fresh tires i try to scrub the mold release a bit by running the pressures low 25-30 and hitting the local mountain run

I scrub the tires Indy /F1 style, with very aggressive slalom inputs, until the tires have some graining.

Did I see a pitch for a new rule to bump up the treadwear minimum to 180 for all ST/SK/RT classes?

Unless it's something brand new, the rule effective next year (min. 180 UTOQ) will only apply to RT. They were considering applying it to ST too, but so far, they still get to use 140 UTOQ or higher.

Not any more since we are adopting the RT classes and dropping the SK classes effective 1/1/2013. And yes, you will still get the extra index for the PAX results with RT, just like we did for SK.

That's an interesting point of view. I don't really look at it as two different street tire rules, as the base classes are far more different than just the minimum TWR. Of course, if we include stock, there are potentially three versions of a street tire rule.
