+1 I can attest to Tom's advice and knowledge of the process as being really helpful. I think buying the salvage back from the insurance company with this car could be the way to go given the potential value of the parts.

When my first Miata was totaled I negotiated the settlement up as far as I could before bringing up the idea of buying the salvage back. When I went to pickup the check, I asked how much it would be. I wrote Auto Club a check for that amount and they had it towed to my house.

I don't know if it makes any difference about when you bring up buying the salvage back, but I was more comfortable not playing that card until the settlement was finished.

After an accident like that, my father told me to take a car out and find a pretty safe and open place
and drive hard but safely... you will feel better and will fix your nerves!

Little did you know your car was originally designed as an airplane. Last minute corporate decision to produce as a car instead ;)

Maybe it's a good thing you landed on the other side of the railing so you were protected from oncoming traffic.

I agree. Bouncing off the guard rail back into traffic woulda been way more impacts to me and the car.

Also having AAA Insurance with the Integra, I went the opposite route and never let them pick up the car, it was towed directly to my house from the accident, as I wanted control of the process, and the car was drivable.

Though I had to deal with low balls in valuation over and over.... the buy back was always a fixed percentage of the offer, even as I continued to chip the value up through 6 months of negotiations. Don't have any of that paperwork, but it was in the 5% range. I tried to keep the original buyback offer, but as I increased the value, the buyback went up on that fixed percent amount. That said even though I brought up the value nearly $1500, the buy back only increased ~ $75.

I might be lucky when I (actually, both Tom B. and Steve E. helped me) negotiated with Farmers Insurance on my Integra. I asked for the buyback when they gave me their first offer. After 3 months of negotiation, the offer went up by about $4k, and I was expecting the buyback to be higher. To my surprise, the buyback remained the same.

FY,I, I have State Farm.
I just got back from the tow truck yard and released the car. State Farm will be moving it soon to their inspection location.

For those salvage lurkers, Cough, Cough, K'Mo., Bob E, I put a tarp over the interior to protect those nice seats
And, the engine started just fine too. Radiatior mounting is pushed back about 1 inch or more. So the air box is mushed a bit.
The engine did touch the hood a little, some red paint, less than dime size, transferred to the hood. Motor mounts did not break. Oil pan is fine.

Added three more photos to the tail of the album from todays visit to the tow yard.
Got some shots of the wheel that broke off on the wood guard rail stanchion.

Looking at this evidence helped me figure out my trajectory better.

BTW, the driver was a young son of a 45 ish year old mother.
He mentioned something to the tow people that he was surprised by the slowed/stopped traffic.

Driving skill is good and all, but controlling a 4500 lbs road mamoth on street suspension presents additional set of challenges. It just ain't going to stop on a dime.

This incident would suggest that it won't stop on an S2000 either. ;)

Traffic has a funny way of doing that. That he was surprised means ... HE WASN'T LOOKING AHEAD FAR ENOUGH.

I hope his mother didn't teach him how to drive, otherwise that means there are two poor drivers out there.

I'm glad to hear you are OK. It's a good lesson to all of us how fast things can happen. I'm hoping to keep teaching Kevin about looking ahead to help avoid bad things happening.

That's probably one of my biggest complaints with most drivers now. So many of them seem to think they're not subject to the laws of physics, or even more scary, don't understand the forces that are at work. I can't tell you how many times I've looked in my rearview to see some soccer mom talking on the cell phone or arguing with the kids driving a 5000+ lb Excursion at 80 MPH and crawling right up my bumper.

WoooHooo, another s2ki forum member spotted a 08 S2000 CR in WHITE FS Near San Fran. on S2KI forums
And it even has less miles than mine did, only 8,500, mine had 16,090.
He's asking $27,500, right near the current KBB value.
All stock, excpet he de-badged it.

I finally did find a "injury". My left elbow is bruised right around the elbow bone. About a 2 inch diameter. Does not hurt at all.

Also, I finally figured out my exact trajectory.

The rear ramped up the dirt pile first then the front right rode up the rail with tires first then the body smashed the stanchion and then the flight started.
Once airborne, my weight bias was WAY rearward with a full trunk and my tires on the back. That's why I saw the sky.
After peaking trajectory, my left rear came down near the rail first and caught solidly(broke a rotor) on top of a wood stanchion. Catching one corner will induce a spin. My front end spun towards the center of the freeway 180 degrees flying over the now ripped off wheel and landed whre you can see in the pics.
What a ride.
