Sylmar Fire

Looks like a few of our members may be very, very close to the fire. Richard Bowman and Marco & Ira Cruz appear to be within blocks of the flames. I can relate, having the fire in Lake Elsinore a year ago come to within a block of my house - very scary indeed. My thoughts are with them and hope for their safety.

We got woken up at 6:15 this morning by police sirens on our block callng for an evacuation. We wondered how that could be since everything burned last month! It turns out we are on the extreme West end of the evacuation area. We have the irreplaceables staged in the garage in case we really do need to move. Luckily, the brush is all gone so when it starts burning through the neighborhoods of Granada Hills towards us, we'll bug out!

I hope this set of fires ends as soon as possible.
I personally get very angry when I see fires start all over California on the same day. If the fires were set intentionally I hope that the ones responsible get nice long and extremely uncomfortable sentence. The wide sale destruction of a fire is difficult to understand if you have not lived through it. When I was young our house burned down with me in it. I was on the ground near a pluming wall. My dad was badly burned. After the fire was put out I got out of the house. Everything we had was destroyed.. Some how we recovered but seeing all the homes burn today makes me recall how bad it was for my family.

Oh yea...
One more fire that was set by some stupid kids out burning everything that they could find was my old Auto-x car back in 2001.

One of my nightmares is that terrorists some day figure out what they could do creating a massive California firestorm.

Imagine a coordinated attack with simultaneous deployment of hundreds and hundreds of incendiary devices on a windy day.

There's so much you could do to trap people into mountainous neighborhoods. Blocking streets and setting surrounding fires.

If you have a coordinated team, planning, and you don't care about getting caught just imagine the disaster you could create without nukes, chemicals, explosives, access, planes.

The area near Ron Horn's house is burning.

John Force Racing employee was on the phone with Channel 9; all the cars are racing at Pomona, but the shop is threatened.

Michael and Daniels Apartment in Anahiem Hill is proabaly a total loss.
The project is 250 units and there units was on the east south side which was burning when we saw it on channel 11.
We are going there tomorrow and see what is left.
They had less than a min to get out after the fire jumped the 91 freeway. Flames 50 ft from the door as they were leaving with Zues Daniels dog.

I'll let you know tomorrow what is left. One car and one truck were left behind which may be ok but we are not expecting the furniture, computers etc to survise.

Steve

These fires are scary. I've only seen footage, but I'm glad to live in Culver City which is nowhere near the fire zones. Thoughts and prayers are out to those who are affected or can potentially be affected.

I know the area generally, and a former Times colleague who works for Edmunds now lives in the hills south of the 91.

It's very strange watching your home town all over the news in flames. I hear them talking about streets that I recognize and it gives me the chills!! :(

Thoughts and prayers to all affected by these horrible fires.

i was outside for the majority of the night in west LA and its scary how strong the scent of smoke is probably 30 miles from the nearest fire.

Thanks for your possitive thoughts!
The fire came within 10 ft of the back patio. However their apt. was spared along with the contents. 100 ft away the next two building were gutted by fire. They were very lucky. The police were not letting anyone back in till later today.

They are very relieved. Thanks Steve

Steve, get any of their valuable stuff outta there!

I was just listening to KFI and heard a report of looting where the resident walked out of his house, forgot if he locked the sliding glass door, returned and found two women stacking up his stuff. Edited to add: the police arrested the looters while he was there.

Glad everyone is okay so far. Ian, are your parents out of harm's way?

Mike

Yup,

My folks are fine, there neighborhood was not threatened... but they didn't get much sleep Friday night

My place was actually more threated in Diamond Bar than my folks in Sylmar...

I'm amazed there weren't more homes lost in this mess! One is to many for sure, but the Fire fighting effort was just AWSOME to watch.

That DC-10 and the P-3s flying over my house, cool stuff and sounds like it did the trick!!

Hope all the solo crew made it through this OK

Ian
