Autocross Patching Party!‏

Just passing this info along from my BMWCCA-SD region club. When I read it I couldn't believe. That's great of Qualcomm.

Hi All:

Our BMW Club is fortunate to have one of the largest autocross sites in the country available at Qualcomm Stadium, allowing us to create courses up to 1 ¼ mile long in the West Lot. We had 10 days there last year and have 5 more scheduled so far until June 2009. We have all noticed the poor condition of the pavement, often dictating where we can design the course and sometimes causing us to delay an event while we sweep up loose asphalt or relocate a turn. Many have said they’d like to patch the pavement themselves if Qualcomm won’t do it. Well, here’s your chance! We have permission and release from liability for the car clubs (SCCA, Porsche, Karts and us) to patch the spots we wish with concrete on Saturday, January 10th, just over a week from now.

PLEASE VOLUNTEER TO HELP US PATCH THE WEST LOT ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 10TH FROM 9AM UNTIL THE AFTERNOON. The other Clubs are gathering 15-20 people apiece, and the more people we have, the more we can do in less time. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to play in the mud for a day and improve our Bimmer Playground.

IF YOU CAN HELP ON JANUARY 10TH, PLEASE EMAIL MATTHEW KOGAN AT Koganmb@gmail.com since he’ll be coordinating the effort.

Thank you for contributing to our autocross events!

Happy New Year!

Dan Tackett
Autocross Director

SDR also has a group pitching in. They're using quikrete to fill holes.

Wouldn't it make more sense to patch asphalt with the same, not concrete? Now will just chip out new asphalt around the concrete patches as they expand and contract at different rates / temperatures.

Our worst freeways in So Cal are the ones they apply asphalt over the top of existing concrete.

I was thinking the same thing. Apparently no one had a steam roller handy. :P

The think stadium said "no heavy equipment."

The deal is... we are not really allowed to do this. Technically. So you can't bring in obvious heavy equipment without people noticing.

I was thinking one of those smaller rollers. Would one of those lawn rollers that you fill with water help?

When Team Blew did an event at the LA County Drag Strip parking lot, I did some minor patching using a quick drying cement (concrete?). But it was very cold so that hampered drying times. It still helped. Probably should have used some type of asphalt product? I used what I could find at Home Depot the night before the event.

Get some of the garage floor epoxy coating, mix in a bit of sand and coat the repair with a nice, thick plop of goop. As long as it sits in the sun untouched for a while, it should really help a lot.

Blasting all the loose stuff away and going well (~12") inside and outside of the repair interface are obvious requirements...

You only need two pieces of equipment to do asphalt well, three if you include something to spray hot oil.

You can get a power patio tamper to compact things, and a leaf blower to clean things up. You might consider running the tamper around before you pull stuff out to break loose the area around the patch.

For quikrete, you just need the blower.
Edit: OK, and shovels, hoes (to mix), something to mix in (wheelbarrow or mortar tray), a broom, and a trowel to smooth with.

They're actually going to use regular concrete instead of quickrete because of the amateur status of most helpers.

Obviously, you need to get Ron Williams to come out there from Topeka for his concrete patching experience (10+ years at Forbes). :D

Oh jeez....I thot this topic was about some kind of new hard-core initiation ceremony like the bikers have when they "patch" new members.

Gio:

Do you realize that is the weekend of our practice/championship?

Wow....I actually didn't realize this. But like Mako said, it's in San Diego for Qualcomm and it's not like it's a "conflict event".

Its the day of the practice only which is full.

So, I don't think its hurting us to talk about it.

Ah didn't realize that either but I posted only because it benefits us as well because some of us do go to SD region to compete for SCCA sanctioned events. And having a smooth Qualcomm definitely helps out our overall division (SoPac)
