Anyone has experience with tire tail? Can it fit 275s?

Hi

I'm thinking of getting a tire tail to carry (4) 275 Hoosiers on 15x9 wheels.
Does anyone have experience with a tire tail on a miata?
Do you think it can fit 275 15x9 wheels?
Anyone heard of people getting tickets on the FWY for having a tire tail?

Thanks
Chris

Might want to make sure the licence plate is not obstructed.....might have to re-mount it on the tire tail.

Chris,
IIRC the weight including the tiretail can't exceed 200 lbs. My 245x17 on light rims for my mustang, were too heavy. They (Saferacer, I think) wouldn't even sell me one. But, now that John Prosser has sold his trailer, mine is for sale. Make me an offer.

To my recollection it's actually 250 lbs including the tiretail.
The specification for a class one trailer hitch toungue weight specification is 250 BTW.

I had 4, 275-18 on 18x8 wheels. No problem.

Thank you Don!
The problem with the trailer is that you need to store it somewhere and my garage is already full of stuff. Also when you drive a trailer the speed limit is 10mph less than regular cars.
I did weight the wheels and they are (total) ~150 lbs so the weight should not be a problem.

Thanks Pete!
I just picked up a Dailan Hitch and a tire tail this weekend!
I test fit some 15x10 with 275 Hoosiers and they didn't fit (they were barely not fitting). My tires would be 275 on 15x9 so I'm not sure if this would make a big difference.

Even though I see in the specs 250lbs as the limit for most Hitches, the Dailan hitch had a torque limit of 200lbs. I believe that I'll still be within spec. The only bad thing is that you get to run with 15 lbs of weight (the hitch) at the rear end of your car...

A big concern on the FWY (other than the visibility of the rear license plate) is the visibility of the taillights. I did not mount anything on the car but my gut feeling is that with 4 humongous 275mm tires at the rear the taillights might not be visible...

Aren't there quick release removable hitch mounts?

That's a very interesting thought Mako.
In a quick google search I found many results but it seems that the only removable part was the part with the ball - so the part of the hitch mounted on the car (in the set ups that I saw) will still be there...

I have the Chase Race hitch on my S2000. It weighs about 11lbs and is removable with three pin / clips.
On my particular application (2004 S2000) it is pretty hard to get the clips on and off with the car flat on the ground. I have to use a needlenose vice grips. It take me about 15 -20 minutes.
I think the Teulies were taking Kathy's off at each event, so maybe it is easier on some vehicles.
I just leave the thing on during AX (no wonder I am not too fast).

Very interesting, I didn't know about them, maybe because they are only for S2000s.
Eventually I got a used Hitch ... it's 12 lbs but it should be OK ... I'm very far away from the level where 12lbs play an important role... 8-)
