From the video, it seemed like the course was almost entirely transitional ... hardly any corners?

I had a baaad day.

3 turns, the rest transitions...a good course, I drove it quite badly though.

The course flowed very well, this is probably one of the best courses I've driven at SD in a while.

On a side note: Nicoles first run blew the sound meter with a 98.XDB

A lot of people were over on sound that normally aren't. Derek Punch was on the edge the whole time.

plus... didnt see any other 225 toyo guy getting under 60 seconds

Sometimes it is the air conditions - humidity etc. that affects sound transmission etc. also meter placement is a factor among other things. Like most things in life, it is not black and white.

Why is my car so different? I've never even been warned for sound.

Yeah, your car was pretty loud!! I was working course on Saturday in the last two run groups and it seemed louder than Ken's has ever been. I tried to find you guys after the event to see if you had been contacted by Sound as I was doubtful it was passing. Think you guys had left already. Cool you guys were able to find another ride! I think the Rios's tires got quite a work out on Sunday!

The sound meter must have been farther away or some thing on Saturday, I was seeing 87-89 db with the occasional 92 spike. I was shocked when they said 98

Is anyone else using a SuperTrap?

I mentioned to Nicole before that when going to San Diego you should always have steel wool ready to put in your tail pipe ... with the tail pipe pre-drilled to put in long narrow bolts across the opening to hold in the steel wool.

IMHO, it IS a good thing to have an exceptional driver in a class. The opportunity for personal growth is far greater, reaching for higher marks, than just battling back and forth over a few tenths.

I have a long ways to go, but I often attribute my early successes with having the opportunity to drive, learn and compete in a similar class situation. Thanks Mike!

98db does seem a bit loud. Your car was for sure louder than 87-89 db on Saturday though.

Definitly a 'loud' day. Trouble with sound measurements is they'll read low 90% of the time, then the day they read right, or God forbid high, everyone gets caught by surprise. One problem with the placement is it was in a gate defined area, it should be in a cone lined area. Plus the down slope to the meter really doesn't help.

You always want to be ready in San Diego. Rule is first time you blow the meter, you're required to make an exaust output change.

We blew it big in Ken Lords car. 93.x on the first run using the rev limiter past the meter (hoped the poping caused it), then 94.x with a light touch in 3rd past it, then 97-98 with a bad shift past it. Luckly my team mate was standing by with an MR2 so we could get some runs counted. It's the first time we brought that set up to San Diego, so even though I think we'd pass on a 'normal' day, we're going to run the stock muffler down there.

Has anyone tried running a muffler made for a much larger engine (like a flowmaster, etc for a V8)? I'd think that the backpressure would be very low, the weight would be minimal, and it might even sound pretty good (i.e. less of the typically piercing Honda sound).

Mako, i will probably make one with steel wool as you mentioned. Since i dont use a turn down, i will probably do it in two steps or three steps for the tour.

1. Turn down facing away from the meter.
2. Turn down with wool installed facing away from meter.

Like i said, i never passed 91.1 db in San Diego with this exhaust setup. Apparently i went up to 95.6 db.
I see what you are saying Jayson and thanks for the heads up. I will definitely make sure i do this right without sacrificing power and mental energy worrying about it.

I am also extremely concerned about sound. Lily blew a 92.5xx in the morning on her 3rd run. And this is after I installed a brand new 18" cansiter Magnaflow resonator similar to the set up up Lugod and Flores. I knew it'd be close but that's a little too close for comfort. All 3 of my runs registered in the 92.xxx vicinity. I've gotta resort to wool and a downpipe now for sure. I even installed a brand new AEM long intake figuring it would be quiter than a short ram intake.

I heard one guy in a stock C4 went over sound which sounds incredulous.

Do they ever get the sound meter calibrated? Sounds like quite a few people were having problems that weren't before ... maybe the common factor is the sound meter itself or an incorrect placement?

Several months ago, Grassroots did an article comparing mufflers. If you are experimenting, it might be worth researching their findings.
