In the tradition of Mako Koiwai's pictorial brain teasers, I would like to present two of my own.

I found this extremely odd while I was digging through some shots I took at the Wendover Pro Solo this past weekend. Notice the cars in the photos seems almost miniature compared to the cones and corner workers in the background, it almost seems as if they were R/C cars being raced on a course.

Both images are untouched (Notice all the crap on my sensor) and were shot in Jpeg on 12 FPS burst with Hi-Speed Crop mode on and shot it while sitting on the floor.

Camera: Nikon D2X
Glass: Nikon 80-200 F2.8 AF-S
Filter: B+W Circular Polarizer

1/160 @ F7.1 ISO 100 @ 200mm

I just thought it was funny and wanted to share. But anyone have an explanation for this?

Mike ... that's why the SCCA doesn't want you to "sitting on the floor" while shooting. It dangerous ... it creates the miniaturization effect ... which diminishes our sport.

also, you need to clean your sensor..

canon services does it for free when you bring it to them, FYI.

I believe it's just the low angle and the telephoto pulling the background forward. That effect helps one create an extra large setting sun in relationship to the foreground. In your shots the workers are fairly close to the car.

Here, 300 mm on a APS format camera, the person in the bg is so far away the perspective seems normal ... even though I'm very low (not sitting ... just standing in a low point/culvert in the Green lot)




Here is the same effect as you're seeing ... with the worker closer to the car ... so the long lens is pulling him up to the car ... flattening the shot. I DO try to avoid having workers right behind the car ... because they end up "looming over" the car.

I agree with Mako and I also think depth of field has something to do with it. Kind of a mild version of tilt-shift lens photography that tweaks the DOF to throw off perspective. EDIT: The motion blur might be creating an artificially shallow DOF by keeping only the subject in sharp focus, too.

It's not perspective/lens trickery, the ST guys have finally figured out that Ken's car is 7/8ths and have built 6/8ths cars to try and beat him

Why would they want to give up 1/8 in motor size for the 1/8 weight reduction/width? I just don't see that helping.

I didn't fit in the 6/8ths scale so I went 13/16th with a 9/8ths motor. Watch out Sunday!

I don't think you can use Whitworth sizes in ST. But I like the idea of the 9/8ths motor.

It's a Honda so it would have been 812.5 millicivics in size.

He REALLY should come out with a Zen and the Art of Racing book ... although it might be VERY short. Perhaps he can use a lot of filler stores about Baby Dolls, etc.
