I'm trying to get advice on what to stock in my event van. I've never carried spill clean up stuff, but I figure sooner or later I'll need it.

Is there a big advantage to specific oil absorbants vs plain old kitty litter? What about price?. Since I have a cat, kitty litter would never go permantely unused in my household.

Just don't use the clumping cat litter. Doesn't work well with oil, as you might recall from the SD Divisional.

"dust free" kitty litter works less well. I think the 'dust" in oil-dri gets down in the pavement and soaks up oil faster. Not a big difference between oil-driand kitty litter. Sams club has 40lbs of oil-dri for @ $5.00.

Isn't the 'Dust Free' the tradeoff for 'Clumping' ?

Kitty litter has weird "crystals" for deodorant and clumping. It doesn't work nearly as well as oil dry.
I think the cat would like oil dry litter better than you would like kitty litter oil dry

Try Diatomatious Earth (D.E.)
Get it at a local swimming pool supply or Home Depot.
40yrs ago I showed this to a friend of mine, He repackaged it as an Oil Dry product, and is now a millionare.
In case your wondering, Diatomites are prehistoric fish fossils.
It should run about $7.00 for a 10lb. bag.

So that's the cause of the oil crisis. Prehistoric fish fossils absorbing all the prehistoric animals that became crude oil...........

By the way John, we banned using D.E. as a course liner because of the supposed health hazards of the powder (not an issue when it's in your pool filter).

That's true, the really cheap sh#$ works best.

BTW While chalking the course this weekend (and fighting our new line machine) I inhaled a lot of flour. Anyway I kept thinking of those old grist mills where sometimes the flour would catch on fire or explode. I wonder if D.E. does that?
Of course if we went back to D.E. vegans probably wouldn't be able to use the course.
